HYDRO'S KV' LINE ALTERNATIVES Three choices of corridors for the 500 KV transmission line fromi Lennox to Oshawa have been presented to the public by Ontario Hydro. What are the differences. Route A is the most souther- ly and is 106 miles i total length (including the egree, lines from Wesleyville and Bowmanville). Alternative B is 110, miles in length and is located in about the centre of Hope and Hamilton townships. Corridor C is the most northerly route and extends 113.1 miles in total. Within the corridors, rights- of-way will be selected',and can be snaked around land features, but the features along the corridor have been, inventoried by Comrmonwe- alth associates, consultants to the Ontario Hydro. Route A is the closet to population centres, but all routes cross several 'major ,highways. Tina Beryer of Commonwealth -Associates saîd that all the corridors have about the'same visual impact, and anyway visual impact did not seem to be important to the people who filled out attitude sheets earlier this spring. What is important -to the people is to avoid people- oriented things and to disrupt as littie good cropland as possible, according to Miss Beyer. AI] three corridors come close to Conservation Areas and somie'trees will have to be cut to accomodate any of the three rights-of-way. On route A six miles of woodland will have to be cut, route B - eight miles and route C - nine miles. Each of the routes crosses quite a bit of cropland, but Miss Beyer said that it was impossible to measure how many miles of working farmis will be crossed because, Commonwealth did flot know' just which land was being worked. Routes A and B are through flat to rolling land w,,hich wouild make construction eas- ier and erosion less of a factor. Route A parallels the trans- Canada pipeline through Dar- lnigton, Clarke, Sidney, and Mýurray townships. Route C is through hilly country whichi would mean more difficu.lt, construction and more erolsion problems, but route C parallels the exisiting 230 KV line through Darlington and Clarke. The costs of the lines have been caý.lcuilated to include property cost, construction costs for- building transmiss- ion uines in the rights-of-way- for the next 15 years and swýitcinýg stations. Route A would cost about $208,40,0 .a route similar to B mwould cost about $0,3, 000 a route like C' would cost $209,060,000 and a comibined route A and C would cost about 'the spreaid between the mnost expensive route and the less is about f'ive million dollars or tw,ýo percenýt of the total cost. DEATH NOTICE LUCAS: James J. at Memori- al Hospital, Bowmanville on Monday, July 3th, 1973. James Lucas, Orono, Ontario. Age 82 years. Rested at the Barlow Funeral Homne, Orono. Service was held at the graveside at St. Mary's Ce- mnetery'ý, Manvers, on Wednes- day at 2 p.m. a-c DURHAM AGRI-NEWS WAGES TO CHILDREN: We have been asked a nurabeir of times about the possibilities of paying a wage to children. Two important points when is being done, is to be certain that the children are actually working on the farmn and contributing to, the farm business and also you.should have some record; preferably a receipt, so that you will have proof at a later date that the money actually was paid. If it is done by cheque, there will b- be no problemn in- this area. There is no reason, why, chîldren cannot use the money that they are paid tobuy their own ciothes, school supples and entertainment, etc., and at the same time, this amount can be considered as a farmn expense. In 1973, a child may receive income up to $1,700 in a year and still be claimed as a dependent child by the parents. The child would not have to file an individual income tax return. However, if the child receives over $1,700 they would have to file an individual return. Lt will be your responsiblity to submit a T-4 Form for any employees, whether children or not. These forms can be obtained from the Department of National Revenue in Belleville. The forms must be completed and returned by the end of February of the following year. A form must be com- pleted for an individual, if a wage of over $250. is'paid, or if there are deductions for Unemployment Insurance, Canada Pension Plan or Income Tax. Concerning the Canada Pension Plan, if a child is under 18, no paymnents need to be paid, however, over that age, the deduction may have to be made. --oncerning the Unemployment Insurance, a dependent of an employer is usually not eligible for cover- age. A dependent would be someone who is normally maintained by the employer. Here, again, it may be wise to get a. ruling from the local taxation Office. Workmen's Compensation is assessecl for all employees receiving a wage. When an amnount paid to achild is considered as a labour expense for tax pur- poses by the parent, it is then deemed to be a wage for assessment for Workmnen's Compensation. This has only been a brief sumnmary of some of the highlights concerning paymnent of wages to children. t may be wise for you to check further into this area, if you are not certain as to deductions and the method of doing this. i
