1liey ail enjoyed the steam show in Orono With blue skies and lots of sunshine the Orono Fair- grounds was a most popular site over the week-end. The attraction of the Eastérn Ontario Steam and Antique show was in all respects most successful in its first year in Orono. Although official fig- ures are not available at this time the president, Martin Manders is more than happy with attendance and stated it more than likely ensures the event again in Orono next year. Interesting as the machines are the relationship between the operators and the machine is a highlight of the whole event. The relationship is certainly one of affection and loving care. The machines are in some cases , babied and coaxed as they build up a full head of steam. Spectators, at least the majority are tranced with their operation and in all the show has been a great success for everyone involved. The show not only included steam location but also hit and miss engines, motorcycles, an operating sawmill, two operating shingle mills, thresh ing machines, vintage gas motored tractors as well as antique cars and trucks and an inside display of household antique items. The display even included a horse-drawn hearse, The sawmill was a big attraction when in operation was the shingle mills and a scaled steam engine grinding wheat into flour. At least two parade pasts were held each day infront of the grandstand by all vehicles that were mobile. The Orono Chamber of Commerce has been assisting the Eastern Ontario Steam and Antique Association with their promotion in Orono and as well have operated a beer garden at the show with considerable success. No Mosport rock festival A report in the Oshawa Times last week hinted the possibility of a Rock Festival being held at Mosport over the Labour Day week-end. The Times refers to a Newcastle sou-ce from their information but quoted no names. In speaking to Reeve Wood- yard he said that Council had meet with representatives of Mosport on Thursday after- noon following the meeting on Wednesday evening. He said this meeting was between only Mosport and members of council. When asked if consideration was given to the holding of a Rock Festival at Mosport the reeve stated that the Mosport (Continued ppge 6> Hydro brings no fortune At the meeting held in Kirby last Wednesday by the Feder- ation of Agriculture one per- son expressed the opinion that when Hydro purchased the land the monies received would be subject to capital gains tax thus reducing com- pensation to the owner. Mr. Bailey, guest speaker, was quick to answer that the prices paid by hydro would not affect this anyway. The prices so far are not that great it was said. After some discussion in which Mr Major stated there had to be co-operation the Trustees took no action in the request The majority of the three man board said they would uphold that the Town- ship proceed with the charge. Mr. Simpson, chairman of the Board, said that in his opinion the end result had been obtained and he could be agreeable to the dropping of the charge. He suggested that Mr. Major meet with the council of the Township of Clarke who more than likely would ask the Tr.ustees' opin- ion in the matter. Carruthers, M.P.P. com- R. The Federation is to appoint a committee to select a route farther north or its proximity and to advance this proposal to Ontario Hydro. The committee was not named at the meeting as considera- tion to have a representative from Hope Township was to be included in the committee. The meeting , numbering about seventy, was made up of Federation members as well as by others interested in the area. STEAM OUTDID TEAM OF HORSES-Operators at the local steam show appeared to have little trouble with their equipment until it came to a team of horses being used to drive a horse power turn-around. The horse power was to operate a circular saw but was difficult to start needing a good steady pull.at the first. The team was unaccustomed to this initial pull and could not be coaxed to deliver that steady pull needed. The operators were still perplexed when your reporter left.
