2-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, Atgust 15th, 1973 orono weeklytimes Second Class Mail Registration Number 6368 Published every Thursday at the office of publication ASOFTSHOESHUFFLE The meeting with council on Friday with a delegation from Leskard and the resulting news release following council's committee meeting sounds and reads like a "Soft Shoe Shuffle". In speaking with the delegation there was no mention of a music concert being proposed by Mosport in fact it was stated that council was against any festival and it was also stated that Mosport had no agreement for such an event. The closest comment to denote soemthing in the air was a statement by the reeve that there was a proposal of a lesser nature than a festival, but this statement went no further. The news release, is what council might call "Guarded" and in afct skirts all around the issue. It would certainly appear from the text of the release that the family type music concert had the approval of council and in no way does the release note otherwise. In speaking with one of the delegation from the Leskard area she felt that council had been very polite to the group but with the final result she was becoming more and more cynical and hoped that in time she would come out of such a depression. it may be that the general public does not know all the facts but surely a municipal body could either say, "we approve" or "we don't approve". Council in fact has taken no stand in the forth coming event proposed for the Labour day weekend in Mosport. Mosport is now a well established part of the Township of Clarke and no doubt will continue to be so for many years. It does create some disturbances and damage to property which cannot be tolerated. But to close it up as some would recommend is an impossibility - we are going to have to live with it and no doubt many so desire to see this enterprise continue in the Municpality. There are, of course many on the other side of the question. Like anything else problems grow as the development grows in drawing spectators or home dwellers. Both the attitude of the municipality with better service are a requirement to a more pleasant and peaceful co-existance. The Mosport enterprise must also extend its services to its customers to breed contentment both of a social nature and a physical nature. Law enforcement has to become geared to the influx as do other services which are concerned. It matters very little whether or not it is a motor race, a festival, a soccer match or what ever that brings the crowd it appears the problem is the same. One may wonder why pick on a rock festival other than it may attract a larger crowd. But so may racing in the very near future or some other type of sport. Not doubt council willbe damned if they do and damned if they don't. . . but what is it? Surely not the continuation of the soft shoe shuffle. Two artists show- .. ing in Oshawa An exhibition of drawings, paintings and prints by two Montreal artists, Ellyn Safra and Tony Keck, open at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa on August 14th. educated at the University of Toronto, Ellyn Safra com- pleted her art studies at the Ontario College of Art and the Artist's Workshop. Using in- dia ink and gold leaf, the artist achieves some enchanting effects through her highly imaginative drawings. In her paintings, Safra's use of colour can only be described as luxuriant. The world which Ellyn des- cribes is surrealistic wonder- land where forms and figures twist and turn around each other. The men and women who haunt the scenes all display a total lack of expres- sion, they seem to float by one another without ever meeting. The execution of the works is superb, the wealth of detail is reminiscent of the 15th century Flemish painting. In form and content the paintings of Tony Keck are completely twentieth century. Educated at the University of Liverpool, England, Keck completed his studies at the Slade College of Art, London, England. Keck fills large canvases with images of musicians and their instruments, these im- ages are repeated across the surface in a staccato rhythm of black and white, relieved only by a small area of a colored circle through which .the positive-negative pattern continues. This technique gives the effect of the subject being caught in the flashes of a Wants logs in Cobourg park dam Mr. Elmore Scott, a mem- ber of the Ganaraska Author- ity from Hope Township asked the Authority at a recent meeting if they were prepared to cut out the centre of the dam in the Cobourg park or "blow" it out. He said last year they spent considerable money to clean the silt out of the pond which was now only returning from upstream. He said we have to do something to correct this. He felt that an opening should be made in the dam so logs could be placed in during the summer and taken out during the winter and spring so the silt during the spring would be washed out and at least leave a channel. R. Forrester asked what was wrong with the silt building up as the pond was a duck pond and didn't need any depth of water. He could see no reason for a channel down the middle of the pond. "It will only be a bill of expense to try and keep the silt out of the pond", he said. He felt that the dam and pond added greatly to the park but could see no reason for having the pond with deep water. Stan White, resources man- ager, said that the department had last year reported on the condition of the pond and that the authority had carried out their recommendation. The secretary informed the auth- ority that there was no grants available for work on the dam or pond. The matter is again being referred to the Ministry to core forth with a further report. strobe light. This exhibition continues until September 3rd. Plan two arenas for Darlington township Plans are now underway to construct two ice arenas with artificial ice in Darlington. This would bring the first arenas to the municipality. The most ambitiuos plan is for the Darlington Sports arena planned on a site near Hampton. The other arena is planned in the hamlet of Tyrone. The Hampton arena is estimated to cost a half million dollars and will have an artifical ice surface, dress- ing rooms and seating capa- city for 800 spectators. The township is eleigible for THIS WEEK from Ottawa PM TO VISIT CHINA Prime Minister Trudeau announced in Calgary that he will visit China, meet with Chinese officials to discuss trade matters and hold talks with Premier Chou En Lai, in mid-October for about two weeks. Mr. Trudeau was invited by Premier Chou to visit China, during the visit of former Industry, Trade and Commerce Minister Jean-Luc Pepin in the spring of 1971. OIL TANKER ROUTE External Affairs Minister Mitchell - Sharp told the House of Commons that Ca- nada is just beginning to fight the environmental threat created by American tankers carrying oüi from Alaska along Canada's British Colum- bia coast. Canada will continue to make representations to the United States on the tanker route -- but he said, it can do nothing to prevent the Trans-Alaska Pipeline 'from being built. WORLD INFLATION At a meeting of the Inter- national Monetary Fund, in Washington, Finance Minister John Turner called on the world's leading finance minis- ters for world-wide action against inflation. Rising prices have become a serious pro- blem for all industrial coun- tries. EMBASSY IN SAIGON Canada and the Republic of Viet Nam have agreed to establish diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level. Edward Anthony Skrabec, already in Saigon as part of the Canadian truce mission, will serve as the first head of the Canadian mission. CANADIAN MUSEUMS Secretary of State Hugh Faulkner announced 18 grants totalling almost $2 million to museums and gal- leries across the country, as part of the federal govern- ment's National Museum Policy. The Policy, announced in March 1972, is concerned with making Canadian muse- um collections available to the widest number of Cana- dians. COMMONWEALTH Heads from 32 Common- wealth countries are meeting this week in Ottawa for the 10-day Commonwealth Con- ference. Discussions will focus on world affairs, including politi- cal, economic and develop- ment matters; comparative techniques of government, which will cover policy-mak- ing, economic strategies and communication with the pu- blic; and projects for co-ope- ration amongst the Common- wealth countries. a forgivable loan equal to the amount paid for labour on the job providing it is undertaken during the winter months. The cost to the township is estimated to be $350,000. The township is this year spending $70,000 on the first phase of a new community hall and arena at Tyrone. This phase, also expected to be undertaken as a winter works project, will provide the building for an arena, but not the artificial ice plant. A community hall is being incorporated into the front portion of the building to replace an ancient hall in the hamlet which is running out of space, according to Clerk Walter Rundle.
