GRADE 13 ELIMINATION PREDICTED Education Minister Thomas Wells today predicted the virtual elîmination of Grade 13 in Ontario and a surplus of qualifîed teachers for the next few years. Mr. Wells told a Progressive Conservative policy confer- ence at York University that Grade 13 will "Virtuatty disappear" as "a> natural resuit of the credit system." "'More and more students will, earn enough course cre- dits to get their secondary school honours graduation diplorna in less than five fuit years," hie said. "Before the endof the '70s, Grade 13 wilt, be a thing of the past." The quality of teaching wil improve because of the "heatthy competition for the availabte teaching positions." BEST WILL WORK "If some competition exists for new teacher graduates, the better ones witl get the available jobs - and the kids in our schools wiii he hetter off for it." .The number of candidates entering elementary schoot training wiil drop significantly this. fali, but enrolment for secondary school training witt be "just as high as it was last year.
