The fire which burned for five hours destroy- ed the printing portion of the building including the news- paper press and some 20 tons of paper. Damage was also recorded to the photo type setters through water and smoke. No estimate of the damage has been made. Police said Sunday they had not decided what action would be taken against the boys. The boys had made entry into the building through a window and pla'ing with matches and paper started the fire. The Guide along witht eh Cobourg Sentinel Star and the Newcastle Reporter is owned by Mr. James Johnston who was still not in the area on Monday morning. The Evening Guide, a daily, along with the tri-weekly Cobourg paper and the New- castle Reporter are presently being printed at the Canadian Statesman. The Statesman is also printing the Fenelon Falls paper, the Bobcaygeon paper and the Peteroorough teview which were also printed at the Port Hope plant prior to the fire. Just lasi week the Canadian Statesman completed the in- stallation of a new Goss newspaper press in their plant with the Orono Times being the firstto be run on the press. The new press is capable of printing sixteen pages, the size of the Statesman, at the same time at a speed of some 14,000 per hour. The press is in full demand this week with the fire closing out the plant in Port Hope. A good number of local residents attended the recent meeting of Clarke Council when for some two hours discussion centred on the fact that council by a split major- ity rejected a recommend- ation of the Planning Board and also on the proposed Retirement Mobile Home Park by Rice Construction. The meeting debated many aspects of both council's rights opposed to the planning boards and that of the proposed mobile homes. Mr. Art Low stated he had researched mobile homes luite extensively and asked to whom you would sell such homes after taking ownership. He also said he challenged the theory that council appoint a planning board and then reject their decision. It was also questioned at the meeting what right the reeve had in submitting his report to council. E.R. Lovekin, a member of the residents in attendance stated the reeve, as executive head of Counil had every right to investigate and file a reort. This authority is granted under the Municipal Act. Mr. Lovekin also stated that council did also have the authority to reject a decision of the Planning Board and he commented that the Board was not beyond lack of perfection. Mr. Doug Moffatt stated that he had never said there was not a need for such homes. "I think there is a place for such development around the Hamlet area where a minimum of services are available at a minimum of cost." The Rice proposal is not in line with the offical plan, he said. Mr. Moffatt continued that he had talked to the man in charge of assessment, Mr. Cil.AIPION I>OST'ON I WEEKEND The Kend LAKE ONTARIO dale series LEVEL LOWER ate Champ The level of Lake Ontario for Ontario wt August was 10 inches below underway the July reading and about 16 Kendal was inches above the average for ram. the tine of year, as stated in a The serie release from Environment games out Canada.commence The level for Aug. was 246.41 Thorndale feet and is expected to decline game to b during the remainder of the afternoon i year before it starts its normal p.m. seasonal rise in January.
