Passenger car production in Oshawa wiil be reduced by 10 jobs per hour, or a total of 160 cars daily. This production was earmarked for shipment to the United States, but it won't be needed, G.M. said in a news release. Production in St. Catharin- es will be reduced slightly. Layoffs will flot apply to employees with more than six months' service in Oshawa and more than nine months in St. Catharines. -1 GM stressed however, that 600 employees have been added to the work force at Ste. Therese Quebec, this month, where small-sized Vegas and Astres are produced. In its release GM said, "It is distressing to us that we find it necessary, to lay off any TOWN COUNCIL SETS PROCEDURE (Continued fromn page 1) buildings in the new arca muncipality. However, under dloser scr- utiny Coun. Kirk Entwisle brought to the attention of the other councillors that the proposed bylaw stipulated no time limit as to when the new structures should be complet- ed. The fees under the proposed oyiaws for a building permit amount to $6 plus $3 per $1,000 of scheduled work in excess of a thousand dollars. Demolition fees are $6 plus $3 per $1,000 feet of gross floor area. Af ter a query by ýCoun. Ken Lyail, Mayor Garnet Rickard admitted that he did not know whethcr the rates for cither the construction of the demol- ition buildings was above or below the rates previousiy in existence. 1In any event, the matter of the time limit involved in the issue was the decisive issue in tabling the matter until proper amendment could be made to the proposed bylaw. Another matter dealt with by having it tabied was the problem. of approving, the closing of certain streets in' subdivision plan No. 708, in Bowmanvillc which dates back as far as the turn of flhc century - 1875 to be exact. Recause the matter was unfamiliar to the majority of council. it was tabled until the advicc of the planning super- intendent could be brought forward. Generai Motors of Canada.
