6-ORONýO WEEKLY TIMES, JANUARY 9th, 1974 Hlockey players associated with the Orono Amateur Athletic Association are currently the goodwill ambassadors of the community, travelling to and fro over the district from Bewdley to Woodville and it was ail packed into the few days over the week-end. ORONO TYKES BLANKET BOWMANVILLE+The Orono Tykes on Friday evening took a 4-0 victory over a visiting team from Bowmanville. Derek Hedges was congratulated by his team mates for the shut-out. In the scoring the four goals were shared by Scott Prescott, Derek Newman, Eddy King and Peter Bolton. Scott Preston and-Eddy King added assists to their credits. ORONO TYKES TO WOODVILLE-The Orono Tykes travelled to Woodville on Saturday where they competed in a tournament with seven othier teams. The local club were unable'to come forth with a victory butdid give a gond account of themselves even though they were outscored quite readily. The locals were defeated 8-2 by Cannington in their first game and by a similar score in their second game at the hands of an entry from Little Britain. The four goals in the two gamnes were shared by Rodney Armstrong, Scott Prescott, Eddy King and Jeff Mitchell. ATOM ATHLETICS DEFEATED BY BEWDLEY-The Bewdley Atoms faced the Orono Athletic Atomrs on Friday evening and took homne a,4-1 vicotry. The one Orono goal was scored by Mike Leslie with assist to Kevîn Philp. ROAST BEEF ATOMS SHUTOUT MILLBROOK-The Roast Beef Atoms played to a shut out Saturday nigbt when they defeated Millbrook 3-0. Terry Coombes was credited with the shiut-out while the three goals went to Bruce MacLean for 2 and the other to Robbie Taîsma.. Robbie also picked up an assist as did George Popodich and Ken Prescott. ORONO FLYER ATOMS DEFEAT NEWCASTLE-The Orono Flyer Atoms downed the Newcastle entry by a one goal mnargîn in a game score of 3-2. Warren Nichols scored the winning goal for Orono. and aleo assisted on the tieing goal. The other two goals were by Bret Johnson and Ken Farrow. ORONO PEEWEE FLYERS SHUT-OUT. The Orono PeeWee Flyers were shut-out by Newcastle on Friday evening 2-0. The two Newcastle goals were scored by Tom Glover and Randy Donnelly. ORONO PEEWEE HORNETS SHOW THEIR CLASS-The Orono PeeWee Hornets showed Saturday in Milbrook why they are on' top of their league when they defeated Millbrook by a score of 9-0. Gary Bridger earned the shut-out for the local boys. Michael Mitchell scored four *of the Orono goals while Jeff Nicholîs netted two. The other goals went to John West, Tom Hollinger and Marcel Charland. ORONO ATHLETIC PEEWEES NOT TO BE OUTDONilBY HORNETS-The Athletics were determined on Sunday to follow in the footsteps of the Hornet when they faced Bewdley. The Athletics dici come up witl> a 7-6 victory over the Bewdley entry. Wayne MacLean lead the way for the local team with a hat trick. Stephen Haynes, Danny Webster, Paul Hurst and Ken Evans furthered the cause with a goal apiece. BANTAM FALCONS PLAY TO TIE WITH MILLBROOK- The Orono Bantam Falcons played to a draw with Millbrook on Satruday night. Bill Hudgins kept the Orono teamn in the game with the goal with assists to Paul Yeomnans and Ron Opoka. BANTAM EAGLES ALSO PLAY TO DRAW-The Bantamn Eagles in an exhibition game with Ops Township played to a three-all draw. Nick Papalazarov, Greg Hickey and Rick Williams shared in the scoring with assists to Milan Popadich, Paul Dykeman, Chris Philp and Brett Newell. TWO GOALIE SYSTEIM PRODUCES SHUT-OUT-The Orono Midgets using two goalies in the game shut-out Coîborne 3-0. Mark Mercer and Roddy Carveth shared the goal tending duties. Chris Robinson counted for two goals in the game with Mike Maitland starting the bail rolling for the local club with the opening goal. NEWCASTLE TOWN LEAGUE HOCKEY REPORT REIDS RALLY TIES COWANVILLE - Reids Hardware used the outstanding netminding of Don Todd and three third. period goals to register a 3-3 tie with second place Cowmanville Auto Parts, played Sunday nîght at Newcastle Areiia. Todd kicked out 28 shots and kept the hardware men in the game in the first period and a haîf of play, as Cowmanville unleashed 17 shots on Reids net. Cowanville who took a 1-0 Iead on a goal scored by Pete McCullough at the 8.13 mark of the second period. Reids then weathers a Cowanville onslaught for the remainder of the period as they rattled two shots off the post and Todd came up with numerous saves from short range. Af ter only 40 seconds of the third period Pete McCuilough scored his second goal of the night and two minutes 40 seconds later J. Darrah scored for Cowanville, giving them a 3 goal lead. The pla'y was then taken over by Reids and from th e 4 minute mark to the 10 minute mark Reîds rallied for three quick goals with one each going to Joe Reader, B. Wolley and R. Dumouchell. PARTNERS 2, ELMHURST 1 -Partners Plumbing riding an unbeaten string of three games, moved into first place by one point beating Elmhurst Hotel 24 Sunday night. The play was fast as both, teams skated end to end and having equal scoring chances. At the 6.20 mark of the second, period while Elmhurst was shorthanded N. Petherîck picked up a loose puck in front of the Elmhurst net and popped it over sprawling goalie George Van Dam. At the 9.30 mark of the third period a goal by Hughie Little gave the pipebenders a 2-0 lead. Goalie Wayne McRoberts sporting a shutout held the Elmhurst scoreless until the 20.00 minute mark of the third period and as the buzzer sounded a shot by Phill Fox hit the post and dropped into the net. QUEENS DUMP SPENCERS -Queens hotel moved into fourth spot as they rang in their first game in '74, dumping Spencers 8-5. The hotel men who tallied goals were 4 by J Cunningham, a pair by B. Rowe and singles by B. Alldred and B. McKay with six assists going to Glen Murphy making goal scoring look. easy. Spencers who outshot Queens 27-20 had four marksmen, a pair going to Mike White, with singles to Greg Gray, Dennis Bugden and Bob Tugwood who is playing excèptionallygood hockey this year. Although Spencers occupy last place they are only'four points, out of a play off spot, and could'becomne contenders by winning the next few starts. Top leaders in indivîdual scoring are Glenn Murphy 21 points, Sid Arnold and Bill McCullough 18 points, Pete McCullough 16 points and Mike White, Ron Good 14 points each.
