At Tuesday meeting the cho1irman, Mr., H. The m-aternity department at Port Hope Hospital is till threatened with losure, Dr. E.A. Hunt chairman of the medical advisory committee told the annual meeting of the hospital trust on Thursday. Dr. Hunt said although there had been some increase in ùtilization of the mnaternity wards - 125 babies were born in 1973 compared to 121 the previous year - if the figures do not increase even further, "it is entirely possible that the closing of this department may still occur at some future date." resolutation. I happenings FIRE DEPARTIMENT KEEPS BUSY -The local fire department during the past few months has kept reasonably busy and have beeni called to some extensive fires starting last summner with the Reid Hardware fire. Since that time the cails have been to many serious fires such as west of Orono, in Leskrd and Kendal. Last week the department received three calîs with the fi rst on March 27th to Newtonville where a shed was destroyeci housing a snowmobile machine which had' just been. placed in the shed following a general tune-up. Later the same day the department was called to the home of Mr. T. Walton east on the third line of Clarke where fire had broke out in the basemnent apartment. Considerable smoke damage resulted. On March 3th the office at the Cowanvîlle Auto Wreckers was destroyeçi by fire and here again the local department made the call. TO RESIGN FROM ORONO SCHOOL-Mrs Ina Brown has handed in her resignation to the Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education to take effect as of June 30th. Mrs. Brown has been a teacher at the Orono Public School. EDUCATION WEEK ACTIVITIES-A number of events are now planned in local Public Schools for Education week. Kendal proposes a dîsplay of Bell circuits along wîth electric __motors. They will also include arts and crafts and a spelling Sbee. Kirby School plans a Metrication for parents on April 22 alông with a Puppet Festival for the following day. Lockharts wiII be favoured with the Canadian Puppet Theatre presenting the "Firebird". For the second time in six years municipal represent- atives from the Scugog River watershed voted dlown a propoal to form an authority for the area. JI HUTTON Mr. Jim Hutton of Orono was the winner of the $100.00 Eliminiation draw at the annual Athletic Booster Ban- quet last Saturday evening held in the Orono Oddfellow's Hall May assist with Orono town ro The Orono Hydro Commisi- sion a month ago submitted a bill in the amount of $201.09 to the Town of Newcastle which amount wac the cost of hydro and fuel used to heat the back part of the Orono Hydro building and which houses part of the hydro operation as well as a community roomn which is used by the local Art Group and as a gamnes room for men in the commrrunity to play billiards and cards. Lt was feit by Commission- ers Partner and 'Forrester that at least part of this bill was the responsibility of the Municipality. They felt that the Commission had no right to incur costs for the comn- munity room other than allowing it to be used. The building is now the property of the area municip- ality for which the Oronio Hydro Commission does pay rent. The bills were returned to the Commission from the Town treasurer stating that it was the responsihility of the Orono Commission as they rented the building. Mayor Rickard stated he had no knowledge of the bill and asked to take it to council as he said he understood the circumstances. The Durhamn Farmer's County Co-operative t its aninual meeting on Mlarch 25thi presented its annual statement for the year 1973 which pointed to consider- able increased sales over that of the previous year. Sales totalled $643,73 in 1973 compared with sales of $401,880 in 1972. Net savings frem 1973 before patronage returns amnounted to $5,544 eompared with $21,023 in 1972 . *It was pointed out at the meeting that the co-oper- ative has grown consider- able since its beginning some 25 years ago. It now holds investments in bonds of $5,000 and wîth the UCO an amount of $19,267. Entertainment durîng the evening was provided by Mvrs. Dora Harris and Certificate presented by fair board gr oup from Garden Hill. Mr. Wesley Yello3wlees -,as elected to the board of directors alonig with the re-election of Lawrence Harris and Ewart R.obin- son. Other directors on the board who were not up for ,re-election in 1973 are Stanley Milîson, Ken Hlend- erson, Gerald Shackleton, Sam Turner, Carlos Tamn- blyn and Francýis Jose. The annual meeting was held in the Orono Oddfel- low's Hall. OId hydro truck sold Seven tenders were receiv- ed by the Orono Hydro Commission for the sale of their old 1954 truck equipped with digging equipment. The tenders ranged from $100.00 to $560-00.
