OCTOBER 9th, 1974 -4 ZORRO GRATTAN WINS AGAIN Zorro, Grattan, ownied and driven by Junior West of Orono, continued to make the winner 's circle over the week-end with a wîn on Sundayat Orangeville in the feature race of the day. The race was won in a time of 2.07 with a purse of $2500.00. This is the third consecutive win for Zorro Grattan, SETS NEW TRAC]K RECORD AT KAWARTHA On Thursday evening the track record at the Kawartha was dropped another notch when Derby's Gent set a new track record of 2.01. The horse is owned by W. Cadman of Parkhill. The new record was setting in the running of the Belevedere Stake pace. In the first race of the night Junior West placed foruth with Glen Tennant's Jus tly Afro. Derek Newman placed second with his own horse, Wil Lor Ben, in the seventh while Gord Irwin finished seventh in, the samne race with Hoot Van.' Newman and West returned in the tenth with West placing third driving Larwil Don, and Newman fourth with Emancipator. In the second race on Saturday evening West placed fourth with Wee Albert while Gelnn Tennant in the same race fin ished in last place with Rob Ron Betsy. Ha rwil Shirley Made ber first appearance under her new owner, Charlie Peake, and placed sixth with Junior .WEest driving. Wm. Reid's, Princess Karen finished second in the fif th behind the winner Golden Smokey. West was fifth in the 8th with Jan Barmin. Canal View Way was third in the ninth with West driving. This race was won by Koliey Bey with Pinedale Jean second. Recom iùlmendl no sunday sorts at-town areûnas t is being recommencled from a joint meeting of the Town Of Newcastle's Social- Services Committee and the Recreation Committee that no Sunday Hockey, be played under the sponsorshitp of the Town or in the Town's Arenas on Sunday. This recommendation went before Council on Monday, October 7th for their consideration. Mr. Bud Fanning, Director of the Town's Rereational Department points out that this will effect some sixty boysÏ playing midget hockey who play at the Bowmanville Arena at 11:30 a.m. every Sunday. He further stated that he does not know just where else the boys could ýplay and was doubtful that any of them would go to church if the practices and gamnes were eliminated. He will await the word from council on the matter. The action by the joing committéeewas taken following letters for such action from the-Christian Reformed Church and the Bowýmanville Baptist Church. To spend l$7,OOO at Oron&ýko arena The Orono Amateur Athetic Association who opçrates the Orono Arena rented from the Durham Central Agricultural Society each winter bas approved that work wil be undertaken ait the arena this year. Thie work incluides a new reino.iIji of thie ice naking plant so that the arena may open earlier in the season and also close later. The remodel- ling is intended to enable the association to operate wken the weather is somnewhat warmer. On Sunday evening the group approved the expendi- ture of $7,000.00 for the new equipment. t was pointed ouit that they hope to receive soffe assistance from the Town Of Newcastle who cover 9il expenses at both the Newcà5t- le Village and the Bowman- ville Arena. Revenue, how- ever, it was ponted out from, the Newcastleand Bowman- ville arenas do go directly to the coffers of the Town of Newcatle. The Orono Athletic Associa- tion finance both the operat- ion of the arena and the promotion of minor sports in the Orono area. HOME INDUSTRIAL AREAS The Planning Advisor3 Committee blocked any move to decrease the size of home-industrial areas from the stated 25 acres as it now exists in most of the four plans in operation within the mun- icipality. Dr. Roy Ru§sell and Doug Moffatt spoke in favour of lowering the lot size but the majority favoured retaining the 25 acre minimum lot size. The Interim plan will also state that no more than three employees other than the owner may work on the property. New Arena Opens Decemuber Tt is expected that the Darling ton arena will open to public use sometime late in December.
