Newcastle council bas gîven assurance tbat tbe office will not be closed until it is again brought before coun- cil wbile on the other band council bas approved a per- sonnel committee recom- mendation approving the clos- ing of the office with Mr. Best going to Hampton "as soon as it is practical" Tbe closing of the office affects Mr. Horace Best and a partstime secretary, Mrs. Elaine Stainton. Mr. Best is by-law enforcement officer for tbe Town and bas had his office in Orono since the inception of regional govern- ment at the f irst of the year. After accepting tbe person- nel committee report promp ting tbe moving of the olmce Councillor Kirk Entwisle re- ceived assurance from coun- cil tbat the office would not be moved until such time as it was brougbt before council again. Councîllor Ken Lyall, on bolidays at tbe time of tbe meeting, bas since returned and bas said tbere is no way tbe office will close Mayor Rickard pointed out that Mr. Best's work did re quire consultation witb the works and planning depart- ments and thiat these depart- ments were boused in Hamp- ton. He felt it would make bis work easier. He also pointed out that telepbone connection between Orono and Hampton was a long distance cail. The office still remains open in Orono but for how long nu one seems to know. New shopping centre for Bowmanville Newcastle council, seems to bave given tbe, go-ahead to build a new shopping centre on King St. E. and Simpson St. bere. Council will meet with the developer, DM Consultants Ltd. of Tbornbill, to work out details and tben enter into a site plan agreement. It also directed the works committee to look into .tbe beavy traffic that may corne to'tbe new centre from sub- divisions on Hobbs Dr. DM Consultants' partnier Peter Weston said once the site plan agreement is signed bis company will try to build the Zeller's Ltd., store there for the end of 1975 and anotber nine stores including a new Dominion store at *a later date. Tbe entire project sbould cost about $175 million, Mr. Weston said. Tbe present Dominion store operation on King St., E. is too small, Mr. Weston said, and if will move across to the largeî store once it's buiît, lie said. Durbam College will be offering a course un Retire- m ent Planning, beginning November th. The instructor is John Woodrow, director of adult training at the college. Mr. Woodrow states that wvith many companies lower- ing the retirement age, that this course is now of interest ta people in their forties as well as fifties. He emphasizes that oeople in middle age shoufld look now,,f0 retirement needs, inasmuch as it takes time to prepare, in some cases, for another career, and to engage in necessary finan- cial planning. Inflation during a period of lessening income puts added, emphasis on the financial planning aspect. Other topics in the course include retirement goals, "The againg process; careers leisure, bealth and accom- modation. Mayor has authority to hir D3art-time help The Town of Newcastle clerk at the' recent meeting of council stated that the Mayor bad autbority to hire parttime belp wbich question came before council when Council lor Kirk Entwisle referred to a recommendation from the finance committee that the mayor and clerk be authoriz- ed to advertise for part-time belp for the Orono office. The committee was also to receive a report back at their next meeting. Councîllor Entwisle stated tbat be did not see such a report eitber at tbe finance .meetings or at meetings of council. In tbe meantime, Mrs. E. Stainton, a former employee of tbe Townsbip of Clarke was bired for tbe Orono office on a haîf day basis. Tbe group went door to door in Orono, Kenda] and Leskard and raised a sum over over $600.00 for the fund. Mr. Sterling Mather said that tbe men were well' received tbroughout tbe area and tbat more monies would still be contributed as the canvass bad not been com- pleted as yet. Everyone wel- come. Tbe bands are sponsoring a disc-jockey dance on Friday November l5th, from 8:30 ta 11:30. The students are bring- ing records to be pre-taped before tbe dance.
