NOVENMRF.R 2MW 1974 -7 GUNNAR OHLUND MVAPPIN( Gunnar Olund of Sweden is currently documenting ahi ph ysical features which exist in a specific area of, the Ganaraska Forest in prepar- ation for the printing of maps for the area. Mr. Olund bas bad extensive training in mapping in Sweden and bas been retained by Silva Com- pany Ltd. to prepare maps for the eastern section of the Ganaraska. These maps when completed will be available for hikers,* orienteering groups and others who wish to bave a greater knowlwdge of the forest. It is expected that it will take. some tbree weeks to complete the cover of the forest area on foot and to place the detail on the contour maps* Mr. Ohlund has com- pleted work in Haliburton, Blue Spring, Quelph and Higb Park in Toronto. He will be in Canada for two- or tbree montbs to complete the work. Mr. Ohlund to prepare bis maps starts wîith aerial sur- veys and then walks over the area to place the physical characters which exist on the ground. The contour maps are in a ratio of 1 - 20,000 and show diferences in elevation every fifteen feet. The maps show the hilîs and valleys and it, is possible to determine the extent of the inclines and hilîs. The mapping also includes the roads, trails, stone piles, old foundations and -anything of a physical nature which may1 exist. Through colour codin9 the type of trees will be noted as will open spaces, streams, marshes etc. The maps will be a great interest to those organîzing orieteering meets or, just hiking, sking or snowmobil- ing in the forests. With the use of a cornpass one is able to trace their course through the bush, with the maps. In speaking of Orienteering Mr. Ohlund states that the sp ort is very popular in Scandanavian countries and is one of the largest sports in the country.
