Cla rke a winter Srecreation area One needs only to drive a few minutes north out of Orono to realize that the northern part of the former township of Clarke is develop- ing into a recognizable winter recreat-jonal area. This bec- ame quite evident over the past week with a multitude of area residents as far away as Toronto takîng advantage of the offerings in this district while on winter holidays. The facilities in Clarke meet the demands of varlous winter recreational likes ran-, ging from snowmobiling to alpine and cross country skiing and even to the winter hiker and a few toboggan enthusiasts. The early snow faîl the realization that winter can be fun outdoors bas attracted untold numbers to take part in a mushrooming trend to enjoy winter for a few months of the year. A FULL CYCLE runs for sleds and automobil- es did replace the horse and flnaily television beamed into the living room with a new form of entertainment. This new inovation in entertain- ment bad to be fully explored and certainly has been by everyone in the family. A few years back the introduction of the snowmob- 'le jarred a host of people away from television and they took to the motor-mount- ed machine to explore, from their view point, what winter was ail about. Snowmobîling catapulted into promînence bringing both irritants and enjoyment. This mode of recreation has leveled off and in most cases is becoming a true family outing. The mach- ines are becoming less noîsy and more reliable and thus more exceptable in general. Nor is the machine today .to be found running up and down local streets within built-up areas such as Orono. Groom- ed trails, both public and private, are in general, prov- iding the facilities for more responsible snowmobilers.
