4~ PUgL1 C SCIIOOLS Low garbage rates astounds councillor Counc. Bob Dykstra stateci hie xas astounted at the low cost of garbage pick-up in Orono when learnled on Mon- day night that residets in Orono were having garbagle picked up for $150 per month and that the charge for this service had not changed since 1969. The matter camne before counchl when Mýr. Brown of Kendal, who niow operates the Orono pick-up as well as the Newcastle Village pick-up was asking for an increase in the contract for Orono. Couincil approved an annual contrant for the Orono Village garbage pick-up in the amount of $9,906.00 which as noted by Conce. Holliday was still only 50 cents a week for the 375 residential users and some 36 commercial cust- omers. The matter is now being referred the the Orono Hydre Electric Commission for their comments. Tlhe local hydro collects the charges through a bi-monithly bill from the customers and is operated as a. muiipal service. Counc. Gray said he could not support the motion and noted thiat the same pick-up in N¶ewcastle Village was cost- ing $3.00 a month and that the charges in the two centres should be sîmilar. Mayor Rickard pointed out that there was a different charge in Bowmanville comn- pared to the other centres and feit there was no relationship. He further pointed out that the Orono pick-up was a municipal service xhile the service in Newcastle Village was on a voluntary basis. , It is now understood that the Orono Hydro Commision ,will recommend new rates for garbage pick-up in Orono te cover the increased cost of pick-up as well as fee collection chargues.
