Oronjo Weekly Times, Wednesday, March 30th, 1977-i? United Counties PeeWeles On Wednesday, March 23 the Orono \..Pee Wees met a Pelham team for their second game in the Little N.H.L. Tournament. The boys played a strong game with Derek Newman making some outstanding saves in goal only to have Pelham tie the score late in the game and beat the local boys 5-4 in sudden death overtime. Scoring for Orono were Steve Stec fromn Kirk Carr and Bret Johnson, Kirk Car from Bret Johnson and Steve Stec, Steven Wood from Kirk Carr and Bret Johnson, and Danny Prosek from Kirk Carr and Jamie Cowvan. Outstanding players for the game were Kirk Carr, Steve Stec, Bret Johnson and Derek Newman. The Great Pine Ridge Kiinmen On March 23, in their second game of the Little N.H.L. Tournament, the local boys came up against another strong teamn from Pelham and came out on the short end of a 7-1 score. Scoring the lore goal for Orono was Steven Mitchell from Kevin Taylor and Billy Storsbergen. On March 26 the Orono Atoms met Millbrook for the third game of a 2 out of 3 playoff series. After tieing the first two games the local boys won the third game 3-1 for the Consolation Trophy. The local boys, playing their best game of the year, came out flying and neyer let up. Greg Philip opened the scoring in the first period on a pass from Billy Storsbergen to make the score 1-0 for Orono. In the second period the Orono boys kept the pressure on and scored two more goals for a 3-0 score. Scoring these goals were Brian van de Valk from Greg Philip and Gilbert Wood fromn David Kruhkert. In the third period both teams played close checking hockey with Millbrook putting in a single goal ending the game 3-1 for Orono. The Orono teamn was presented the Consolation Trophy by Russ Major of the Orono Amateur Athletic Association. Congratul- ations to ail the boys for a well played game and winnîng the trophy. As this was the last gamne of the year 1 would like to thank Ron Taylor, Robert Brandt and ail the parents for helping out with the boys and making it a very rewarding year. Thanks, Denis Mumford. SPORTS Orono Midgets win Bob Best Tournarment Wednesday evening past, the Orono O.M.H.A. Midgets were victorious in their 2 games and won the Bob Best Memorial Tournament. This is the first in many years that the home team has won the trophy. In the first game Orono faced Port Hope and narrowly defeated their opponents 1-0. The lotie and winning goal came with 8 seconds lef t in the second. Scoring for Orono was Michael Mitchell, assists to Terry Deriet and Jim Leslie. The win advanced Orono to the championship game where they met the Graf ton entry. Graf ton was first on the score board and then took a 2 goal lead in the second. Orono's first goal came haîf way through the second fromn David Sunstrum, assist to Doug Hancock. Orono's tieing goal came half way through the third. Scoring the goal was Marcel Charland, assist to Doug Hancock. Neither of the 2 teams were able to advance on the score in regular playing time and 10 minutes sudden death overtime became effective. Wth just 57 seco nds into the overtimne period' Michael Mitchell put the winning goal past the Graf ton goalie, assist went to Kerry Davis. Final score was 3-2 for the tired but happy Orono team. Other scores for the tournament were: Grafton 10 over Omemee 1 Port Hope 3 over Omemee 1 which allowed Port Hope to take the consolation trophy. Saturday, March 26, Orono travelled to Uxbrdigei to play in the Uxbridge Invitational Tournament. In the first game Orono faced the King City entry and were defeated 4-2. King City opened the scoring and held their lead throughout the game. The Orono goals were scored by Marcel Charland and Ken Evais. Assists went to Terry Deriet and Mark Charland. The loss put Orono in the semi-finals for the consolation against Port Perry. Orono opened the scoring with a goal from Pat Williams assist to Ken Evans. Port Perry tied the score with 1 second left in the first. Orono advanced 2 more goals in the second. Goals coming from Pat Williams and Gary Clapdorp, assists to Ron Opoka, Mark Charland, Michael Mitchell and Kerry Davis. Port Perry came back with one early in the third but Orono came right back with one from Ken Evans, assists to Pat Wililams and Mark Charland. Port Perry came on strong the remainder of the period to score 4 more goals, one on an empty net, to make the final score 6-4. The Orono team will begin their series with Lindsay in the near future. This will be a best 2 out of 3 series. Local Horsemen active at the Kawartha Bruce Tenniant presents the concellation trophy to Steve Corey of the Port Hope Midget hockey club who were the concellationi winners at the recently held Bob Best Memorial Midget tourna- ment. Glenholme Joe in nne starts this year has placed first on three occasions, second twice and third on one occasion. In the ninth race of the card Gerald Robinson had to settle for third driving bye Ridge Gene with the win going to Hieland Bonnie. In the tenth July Time driven by Robinson finished second with Daleack Orono Building Contracter Brick - Bloch - Concrete Stone Work Carpentry - Cabinet Work Floors - Tle, 983-5441 Oroito taking the top honours of the event. Ray Staples drove his own horse, Goldie Rice, to a third place finish in the third race with Gerald Robinson finishing fourth with Jefferson At Last. Derek Newman was third in the fourth with Our Protector with Gerald Robinson right behind in fourth place driving Argyel Eoyal. In the sixth race Junior West drove to a third place finish with Pegi O'Direct.
