1-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, March 3th, 1977 Orono --meêmbers f-hear gardening tips *The guest speaker, Mr. Dick Vanderstoop, Lawn. and Garden Centre, Newcastle, set the mood for an early spring at the Mlarch meeting of the Orono Horticulturafl Society held last Thursday evening. His humorous exposition of -25 ways to kili your lawn" was an even better spring tonic th.an the traditional suiphur and molasses treat- ment that many of us have enjoyed in years gone by. Tips on fertilizing, prunfing, p)esticide control, the hest soit mixtures fpr seeding and transplanting, useful publi- cations available from the MUinistry of Agriculture, were included in his excellent address. We were also told how to make vegetable grow- ing more enjoyable by get- ting away from the straight line method and, instead, planting in beds with a few flowers mixed in. The old- fashioned marigolds are ex- cellent for interplaintiflg with vegetables as certajin pests are repelled by the strong scents. At this time of year and Up to the middle of April, the application of a dormant spray to shrubs, fruit trees and ornamentals will kilt the over-wintering bugs and re- duce the amount of spraying neecled later on. The president, Mrs. Chal- lice, thanked the speaker for his most enjoyable and infor- mative talk and the newly appointed Secretary, Mrs. Margaret H-ancock, was also given a round of applause. Mrs. Challice mentioned that plans were underway for a tree planting programme in the village of Orono and invited the members to send in their suggestions for suit- able locations. Another pro- ject this year will be a competition for the "Most attractive flower beds, plant- ings and surroundings of homes," in two categories - home not more than five years old, and homes older than five years. In each category, prizes will be awar- ded up to a value of $25,00 for first place and $15.00 for second place. On Saturday morning, forty or more members of the Society met at the Town Hall in Orono and went in a group to the Sugarbush run by Allan Downes on the 7th fine. Members of the Junior Horti- cultural Society joined in the fun and were accompanîed by the,Junior leader, Mrs. Frank Zegers. The walk, in bright sunshine, to the sugarbush was enjoyed by everyone and Mr. Downes was there to explain the modern method of collecting sap - a far cry from the old days when sap was collected in buckets and Pumpîng Ouf Septic Tanks Bert Tompkins LPhone 786-2552 786-2636 carried by hand to a holding barrel. Mr. Downes told us that in one day and a half lhe had collected as miuch as 2,200 gallons of sap from i 300 trees. Back at the shack, the sap was bubbling in the pans and from the otd wood stove pancakes were served with generous hielpings of maple sy rup. Somebody mentioned that -Mr. and Mlrs. Downeti weire celebrating thieir 25th wedding anniversary and this news was greeted withi forty odd voices joining spontan- eously in song, "For they are jolly good fellow>s, which nobody can denyý." t was a real fun occasion and thor- ougly enjoyed by everyone, young and old, who partici- pated.
