4-ORON.O WEEKLV TIMES, WEDNESDAY, MAY Ilth. 1977 Orono scouts, cubs pila nt trees Last Saturday the Orono Çubs and Scouts took part in ~he fourthi annual "Trees for Canada" exercise. Their des- tination for the annual plan 't- tmg was the old Orono dump, formerly a gravel pit, north off the Taunton Road west of Orono. The cubs and scouts were accompanied by their parents and leaders who ail found it rather difficuit digg-- ing in the abandoned gravel pit. The site of some eleven acres has been turned back to the Town of Newcastle who generously made the site available for the tree plant. The site has now- been encircled with the planting of, poplar trees along with hun- dreds of red pine. The scoutîng organization will continue to use the site for tree palnting until it is completely planted. Bob Willsher, chairman of Van Belle oný gardening .Roses are a must in every garden, they will revive the spirits when you corne home f rom the office and a hard day at work. This is beauty you can touch, feel, smell and see. Roses are divided into var- ious types, the main types grown in the home garden are the Hybrid Teas, Grandi- floras, Floribundas and the climber. The Hybrid tea rose bush has single large fiowers, borne on single stems and will bloomn intermittantly from the rniddle of May through to frost, a good example is the," Peace Farnily, Peace, Flam- ing Peace, Pink Peace and Chicago Peace. Grandiflora roses are similar in growth habit and fiowering to the Hybrid Tea except its growth is much more vigorous~, and some plants can grow as high as 5 feet tail. Where roorn permits plant some Grandi- fieras in the centre or as a background in your rose garden. One of the best grandiflora to corne on the mnarket is Queen Elizabeth, its lovely pointed buds and ful deep pink bloomns can be used in any flor al arrange- ment and will last a week -in the house. Floribunda roses carry trusses of srnall single or double flowers, which gives them the mass effect, gyenerally growing to about 24 inches high; they make an excellent hedge by planting them 17 to 24 inches apart, they corne in wide ranges of colours. Climbers are mc- reasing in popularity, with their mass s'how of bloorns against the backdrop of a wall or trellis. In my opinion for best resuits, try to plant the red or pink varieties, such as the red Imprioved Blaze or Coral Dawn and New Dawn in the pink shade. White and yellow seldorn give you the resuits that you would expect, they have trernendous growth but very lttle bloom, and the bloorns are of ten a washed out ,hade. Planting roses is easy when ,ou buy the potted prepruned otted rose bushes available t rom your local garden ,cent- re. Make sure to prepare the soil by adding a generous amount of humus, in the forrn of compost from your garden or use manure which can be purchased in various sizes. The old saying, "An ounce of prevention is better than a Dound of cure" applies exact- [y to roses, when it cornes ta spraying. It is better to spray Dr dust once every two weeks then to spray af ter the insects and the fungus are on the rose bushes, start about the lSth of May, and repeat every two weeks, with a dual purpose rose insecticide-fungicide, which are availahle in the handy squeeze duster and will do 31 or 4 bushes for the season. If you have more then 2 or 3 bushes, it will be more economical to use a spray, buy the disystox base insecti- cide such as Isotox, Cygon 2E and use in combînation with a systernic fungicide such as Benyrnul,- or the standard fungicide, Captan or Phaltan. QUESTION 0F THE WEEJ< This cornes from Mrs. A.Ký of Ritsoni Rd. N., in Oshawa; we have a real problem with black spot and mildew on our roses every year, what can we do? First you should spray the sou in your rose bed with a dormant spray, early in the seaqson with a lime sulphur solution, such as Orthorix then follow up every other week with a systemnic insecti- cide and a systemic fungi-- cide, and after a prolonged period of rain, spray right af ter the rain which will keep the fungus from spreading. PLANT 0F THE WEEK( The Rieger Begonia. It wa The Rieger Begonia. It was originated and hybridized in West Germany about 12 years ago, and is being irnproved yearly, With new strains and healthier blooms. The first rieger was a single orange fiower, today we have them in yellow, white, pink, orange and red both in single and double flowers. It can be used as pot plant or in hanging baskets, indoors or outdoors, and if treated properly, will last for years. Water thor- oughly when soil feels dry, with luke warrn water, and fertilize once a rnonth, and keep them in a well lighted location but not in direct sunlight. WHAT'S NEW Luxuriant Bleeding Hleart, developed by Walters Gar- dens in Michigan, U.S.A. The first bleeding heart that will grow in sun or shade, it blooms continually from spr- ing through to frost. It is slightly srnaller than the old fashioned bleeding.heart, pin- kish red in color, a real winner. Questions on Gardening, can be sent to GARDENING, Orono Weekly Times, Orono, Ontario. "Trees for Canada" project for West Durham District said there were six locations selected for tree planting in the district this year: New- tonville, Orono, Janetville, north of Pontypool and two pieces of priva te property. He also sai d it was an excellent fund raising project for the cubs who last year raised $6,000.00 in the West Durham area of which 40 to 50 percent of the money stayed in the district with the remainder going to the na- tional and provincial head- quarters. JEach cub prior to the planting day seeks pledges for his plantings at so mucli a tree planûted. Each boy is, alloted sorne twenty-five trees to plant along with his parents and leaders.
