Kirbysenate club The Kirby Senate which 'iolds forth in a back roomn of the Kirby General Store operated by Bob and Bill Reid is being recognized as the poltical nerve-centre for the area including the Town of Newcastle. During the past municipal election ail aspir- ing politicians were given an audience at the 'Senate' and this is now being carried into the provincial election now well underway. Last Wednesday Stephen Lewis, leader of the opposi- tion in the legisiature and the New Democrat Party visited the Senate with his enterage and a following of the metro press. The senate room lined with cartons of canned foods, kleenex etc. was packed for the occasion not only by members of the club but also members of the news media. The Senate lead by Bill eid Sr. and S. B. Rutherford took the NDP leader through a maze of questions from farm produce prices, t, land use, regional government and the Quebec situation. S. B. Rutherford noted that farming costs had risen some five times over the past few years with the rising cost of oil and fertilizer. H1e also said t hat a farmer cannot afford to pay labour costs at the rates that exist today unless the price at the farmn gate for produce was increased. "If Our costs go up three timnes then so should the price of our food produce, he said. Stephen Lewis pointed out that the stabilization price was set to give a basic price to the farmer and he believed if consumers were aware of the problem they would be agree- able to pay increased costs for food. Lewis spoke uf the middle- man who he said did add to the cost of food. The leader of the opposition also said the province did not have a sounid land-use policy and that if' the NDP were elected such a policy would be set upon within four to five months. Agriculutral land must be protected, he said. a part of the full compliment want to put some of the standards, he said. .1 Lewis jokingly said you should have what you want .(Continued page -7) enate take note of the w,,ords of Lewis. S. B. Rutherford claimed that Regional government was aiding and abeing de- velopers taking over farm- land in the area and he said government was getting too far away from the electors. "The grass root voice is not being heard", he said. He suggested that there should o nly be one level of municipal government and that the regional level should be wîped out. Stephen Lewis said Region- ai government was not going to go away but in the meantime it should be made to work. Doug Moffatt, local NDP candidate said there should be more study and people should make the choice of development in the community. He pointed out that this had not been the case in the Courtice area. Moffatt also noted at the senate meeting that it was quite likely there would be no environmental assessment hearing for the proposed nuclear hydro plant. In reply to this observation Stephen Lewis said there must be such a hearing.
