-last week the Region of -urham carried out the emptying of the Oron Water Tank at the north end of the Village. During the exercise the use of the tank was cut out pressure was maintained through the use of the two pumping stations. The following day the inside of the tank was inspected for defects. Some in the Village-<elt the water should have been used to filI the Orono Swimning pool but this was not to be the case as the water was drained out from the water tank into the nearby ditch and also ran down the street. It is understood that once the procedure was in opera- tion it was physically impos- sible to make use of the water to f111 the tank. A little forsight might have made use of the water rather than having it wasted. ORONO SWIMMING TANK FILLED On Tuesday of this week the Orono Swimming Tank was filled from the Orono Water .Systern. The undertaking was done by the Orono Firefight- ers. Ail will soon be ready for' the opening of the pool sometime near the end of the month. FIREFIGHTERS CONDUCT SMOKE PRACTICE IN PORTION 0F ARENA The Ororto arena had pos- sibly played its iast role in the affairs of the Village and this rote differed from ail others during the past fif ty years. On Tuesday the Orono fire fighters used the basemnent portion of the front. of the arena for a -practice using gas masks in a smoked-filled room. Through the use of Smoke bomnbs the basement roomn became a near reality of an actual fire where smoke hinders the operation of the firefighter. A dummy was used in the Orono exercise and firefight- ers practiced the use of the masks to find the dumnmy in the dense smoke. It even required crawlîng on hands and knees. The only element missing was heat. Although it is impossible to check every professional firm, the AIB anticipates that as mnany as 700 flrms wiil have received audit attention by the -nd of June. Althoug h some form of audit will continue for the life of the Board. "The combination of our audit systern and the fines the Ad-_ ministrator can levy, plus- a desire in most cases to follow the gluidelines, should ensure corn- pliance froin the professional comminunity,", says Reed Sco- wen, Director General of the AIB prices and profits branich. To date, 215 professional firms have been reported to the Admninistrator for flot properly complying with filing require- mients of the reg ulations. The Administrator can levy fines ranging fromn $100 to $10,000 for failure to file or for non- compliance. The audit system will verify, on a sample basis, the com- ,Iiance reports, of fn-ms reporting und er the guidelines. The Audit Services Bureau from the De- partmef t of Supply and Services, with as many as 40 auditors, is assisting the Board. The AIB has also set up a special delinquent tearm to iden- tify any firm subject to controls Trudeau on I have always feit that there is a very strong argument for keeping controls as long as possible, except and until we have agreemen t fromn the main ecçioomie decision-makers in the: economny on some kinci of volun- which is n ot iling.
