Next to racing in the Molson Diamond Indy at Mosport, July 1, 2, 3; two- time Indy 500 winner AI Unser would probably want to watch it. That's how exciting the 37-year old USAC veteran driver thinks the, Mosport race will be. "Boy"~, he said, "if there was one road race I was gonna be a spectator for, that one at Mosport would be it."' The Molson Diamond Indy wiIll be the only road race this year in the United States Auto Club series for Indianapolis cars normally seen on oval tracks. At the same time, Mosport will he the first USAC road race for several years and it comes only a week after the 500 mile championship event at Poc- ono International Raceway in Pennsylvania, making the task of preparîng for Mosport even tougher for the Indy teams. Although bis name was made at Indianapolis witb back to back wins in 1970 and 1971, AI the' younger brother Of two-time Indy winner Bobby Unser is no stranger to road racing circuits like Mosport. As a member of the prestigious Vel's Parnelli Jones Racing Team, AI and bis team have extensive road racing experience. In the North American Formula 5000 series in recent years, Unser and bis tLeam mate Mario Andretti were solid front runners. AI himself scored eight wins in a Formula 5000 Lola including the final race of the 1976 season at Riverside, Califor- nia last October. For Mosport, Unser's "Amercian Racing Special" Parnelli racer is one of the new breed of Indy car. Lt is based on a Formula 1 chassis and body powered by a Formula 1 based V-8 Cos- worth engine instead of the traditional four cylinder Offy engine or the Foyt V-8 engine which carried Unser to bis two consecutive Indy wins and the USAC National Championsbip in .1971. Unser's entbusiasmr for tbe Mosport race comes in part fromn the fact that be no doubt figures bis teamn has a good chance of preparing him a winning car and bis recent experience road racing should give hlm a sligbt advantage. Secondly, as a racer born and bred from the largest and most successful family in racing, he'd race anytbing witb wbeels on it just for the sport.
