bave looked back at somne old experiences and now we look ahead at our plans for the future. Some may have known for many years what field they wanted to go int o but others may stili be uncertain. We must look at ourselves and discover the talents which God gave us and put them to use. Life is flot always going to be easy. There will always be dis- appointments but also new challenges and new opportun- ities. We will always be saying "good-bye"_ to old friends, but then there will be new ones to make up for the old ones. For many of us this will be the Iast time we will be together and see each other. It is a pleasure for me to represent the graduating lass of 1977 as the Valedict- orian speaker. Not having much experience in public speaking, and since I an at present studying music, a thought struck me. The audience would be thrilled by my ingenuity. But unfortunately Beethoven could not accomn- pany me tonight with this great work. And so 1 shal humbly and boldly stumble through saying it. The dictionary definition for valedîctory is "a fareweil speech, especially one deliv- ered at graduation". The simplest farewell is a plain ",good-bye". Shall 1 end now and just say "good-bye"? 1 would like to take this opportunity to refl(ect on the past and look ahead to the future. As we think back over the years, we remember our first day in high school. l'in sure that for most of us it was a frightening although exciting time. It was a time in which we could mnake new friends and possibly learn some more so that when we were finished we would be ready to steP out into the world On Our own as mature people. At the first opening assemi- bly, we ail gathered together in the gym. After listening to several introductions, Our names were called off and wIe dispersed to our home moims. We were given our first Clarke High School Handbook which outlined ail the -'do's" and "dont's". We were warn- ed that if these rules were flot obeyed, we would be taken care of in Sl's office. Skipping classes was an offense whicb many of us committed during the first years of high school.1 After a few weeks, we heard talk about initiation. We had to carry the grade thirteeners books to their class and then rush back to our own class hoping to make it before the final bell so- we would avoid getting a detent- ion. But we made it through mainy embarrassing situat- ions and we officially became part of Clarke. The years went by quickly and soon we were the grade thirteen, class of Clarke. Grade thirteen for most of us was a year of hard work. We realized that sipping cllasses only meant gettmng further behlind. 'm sure that 'somne evenings we would sit behind a stack of books wondering if we would ever hit the bottom. 1 recaîl spending hour after hour finding the points for a graph which we could draw in just a few seconds with the spirograph. It was then that I decided it was time to purchase a calculator. Our most exciting chemis- try assignment must have been the one in which we had to make models of the different molecules. Here, for the first time, we could use our artistic talents for chemi- stry. The edible models retained their shape only long enough to be marked by Mrs. Jacobs, and then they disap- ,peared. Commencement marks the end of one career and the begining of a new one. We Clarke Public LIBRARY PHIONE 983-5507l Mlonday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 2:00 to8:00 p.m. 1Saturdav 10*00 t05:00 p.mi. I would like to wish ail my fellow graduates the very best for their future, on behaîf of the graduating class, 1 would like to say "Thank You" to the staff for the patient help and guidance they gave us through our high school years. I'm sure that without their help, we would not have ,made it . 1 wouldalso like to thank my fellow graduates for making my high sechool years especially the last one,' sucb memorable ones.
