Town and regionat odds in planning The Town of Newcastle and committees of the Region of Durham have fotmd themn- selves at odds with one another during the past two weeks in the field of future planning. At a recent meeting held in Bowmanville the Regional Planning and Development Committee proposed future restidential development in Bowmanville extend to the west of the Town. Newcastle council has been considering that future development should extend to the north and east of Bowmanville. Only last week a joint meeting of the planning and development committee along with the public works committee of the Region of Durham chose a route for an arterial road from Highway 401 to north Bowmanville that differs from a recent choice made by the council of the Town of Newcastle. Newcastle council had cho- sen a route along the Training School road north fromn High- way 401 to Concession Street. The r egional committees have opted for a route usîng Cemetery Road from High- way 401 to Highway 2, then directly north to vere west north of th Bowmanville-Zoo to Mlearns Avenue. At the joint regional meet- ing Counc. Bob Dykstra, Newcastle and a member of the planning and develop- ment committee, was at odds with Mayor Rickard, chair- man of the public works comrmittee. The decision of the route affects the location of a new intersection on Highway 401 and theMinistry is seeking some input from the Region before a choice on location for the new interchange is app- roved. The flire started when gas leaked f'rom a GTO car that The fire isbeieved to have started when gas ignited following the backfire during the starting of a GTO car. At the time the car was slightly tited and it is believed that gasoline leaked out on the floor. The flame soon spread to fibre glass dust behind the car and the building soon became araging inferno.. Mr. Rein Bonsma was the owner of Arien Collision Clinic with Mr, Jerry Cocker- mne owner of J. and C. Cycle Mlanufacturing Ltd. The lat- ter made Motorcycle farings and had some $5O0i stock aIt the timne of the fire. The loss Io the Collision clinic was estimated at $20,000.
