Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, January 4th, 1978-5 On Fni., Dec. 3th the Rideau Demolition Midgets tavlled to Lakcfield for an exhibition game. Lakcfield defeated Orono by a score of 6-4. Pat Williams scorcd two goals with singles going to Paul On Dec. 27th the United County Atomn teamn travelled to Oakwood to take part in an Atomn tournamnent. Orono met Lindsay ln the first gamne and were defeated 11-1. The lone Orono goal was an unassisted effort by Duncan Walker. The second gamie for Orono was for the consolation trophy but they came up short and were defeated by Oakwood 4-2. The Rideau Demolition Midgets hosted Pickering at the Darllngton Sports Centre on Monday, Dec. 19th. Orono were defeated 10-0 by the Pickering team. This was the poorest showing by the Orono team. Lindsay - Ops Tournament On Monday, Dec. 26 the Rideau Demolition Midgets played their first game of thse tournamient against Canning- ton. Orono were tied wîth Cannington 2-2 at the end of regulation time and the overtime perîod was scoreless but Orono won the game by outshooting Cannington ln the overtime. Jeff Westbrook and David Hutton scored the Orono gaols wi th assists going to Pat Williams, Paul Reddick, Bob Myles and Preston Long. Jeff Westbrook, David Hutton and Preston Long played a strong game. By winning the first game Orono moved into the winners section therefore 1Orono Pee Wees played well at Lindsay-Ops tournament advancing to consolation finals. In the first game against Lakefield the boys were really hustling losing a close game 3-1. Rodney Armstrong scored the lone goal with an assist to Scott Prescott. Jeff Mitchell was a standout in goal. Scott Prescott played an excellent 2 way game. Lakefield went on to win the tournament. The 2nd gamne was a real thriller against Little Britain. The score at the end of regulation timne was tied at 3. Orono boys won it in the sudden death overtime period by outshooting Little Britain 4-3 even though they had to play shorthanded for part of the overtime. Scott Prescott fired all 3 goals with assists from Don Doxtater, Steve Sawyer and Eddy King. Jeff Mitchell played an excellent game in the net for Orono. In the 3rd game, the consolation championship, Orono lost by a score of 6-2. However Orono outplayed Lindsay for 2 periods and only the excellent goaltending of Lindsay and tough luck around the Lindsay net prevented Orono from building an insurmountahle lead. The Orono scorers were Duff Hamre, with an assist to Rodney Armstrong and David Groskopf unassisted. Scoring the first Orono goal was Rod Storsbergen with Duncan Walker assist- ing. The other Orono goal came off the stick of Scott Irwin with the assist going to Rod Storsbergen. Again Allan Hall played well in the, Orono net. The Orono teamn played well with only a day's notice of the tournament and going with 10 players. having a chance to be tournament champions. In their second game Orono defeated Lindsay by a score of 2-O. Jim Lycett was spectacular ln the Orono goal, Mike Mitchell set up both of Pat Williams' goals with Paul Reddick assisting on one goal. Mîke Mitchell and Pat Williams played a strong game. SThe win in the second game put Orono in the championship final on Tues., Dec. 27th at 7:00 p.m. against Fenelon Falls Flyers. The flyers defeated Orono 1-0 with the goal heing scored with 2:50 left in the game and giving Fenelon Falls the championship. Gary Bridger was superb in the Orono goal with Steve Clark and Paul Reddick playing strong games. The Orono team put on a fine showing at the tournament and couid have been champ- ions as the final game could have went their way but the Orono boys displayed good sportsmanship. December 5tis, Newcastle 7, Orono 4. Orono goal scorers were Jeff Mitchell with the hatrick and David Groskopf with a single. Assists went to Murray Denniis. December litis, Orono 5, Bowmanville 1. December 12th, Orono 6, Oshawa 3. Goal scorers for Orono were Murray Dennis, Scott Prescott, Randy Tennant, Jeff Mitchell (2), Scott Richards. Assists went to Don Doxtater, Rod Armstrong,, Ted, Oster (2), Scott Prescott, Duf Hamre. December l6th, Port Perry 9, Orono 1. Ebastec-Lavalin Imc., a consult ing engineering firm, bas been awarded a contract worth about $20 million to provide specified engineering services to complete the design of tise' generating station. Ontario Hydro will continue to provide tise pro- ject management and pro- curemeut functions from the office of the Toronto-based consultant ànd will continue to manage ail construction on site. A $892,200 contract to con- struct about 19,000 feet of railway siding at Wesleyville has been awarded to Loram International of Calgary, Al- berta. Work on the railway sidiug is expected to begin May 1, 1978, and continue ail summer. The siding will lead fromn the main CNR line across Hydro property to the power- house. During construction it will be used to bring heavy cquipmcut and materials onto site. After the station is complctcd it will be used for- operational maintenance pur- poses. Flagpersons will be assigu- cd to contr ol vehicular trafflc SPOR TS at the Lakeshore Road level crossing when the trains arrive with construction cquipmcnt. Orono Midgets On Thursday, December 29th, the Bantams played three games in a tournament in Uxbridgc. The first game was against the Uxbridge "A" team and was made the league game that was cancclled two weeks ago because of frcczing main. The first period saw just one goal scored, that off of an Uxbridge stick. There was no scoring in the second period and half-way through the third period Shayne Adams slipped a pass back to the point man, Jim Moffatt, and he let go a sizzling shot to catch the corner and tie the game up. With just 1.51 left in the game Uxbridge slipped one in to take the win of the fast-moving game and place Orono on the Consolation side of the tournament. Af ter a delicious roast beef dinner the boys met Pickering in the second game. Ken Prescott opened the scoring on a pass from Kirk Carr. Then Pete Kruhkert connected with Paul Reed to put Orono ahead,2-O at the end of the first. Pickering got the oniy goal in the second period but Orono gave out full steam ln the third period with two more goals. Kirk Carr got the third goal of the game from Jim Moffatt and Ken Prescott got his second of the night from Paul Reed and Daune Major. Pickering then got another to end the game 4 to 2 to advance Orono to the next round for the' Consolation Championsbip. The Bowman- ville "B's" were tihe opposition this time but the Orono boys were just too strong for them winning the game and the championshîp by a score of 7-1.- Pete Kruhkert scored with Paul Reed and Duane Major in the first period. Duanié Major scored from Jim Moffatt, Pete Kruhkert connected with Ken Prescott and then Shayne Adams tipped in Jim Moffatt's blast from thse point. Paul Reed tipped ln a pass from Ken Prescott and Terry Hedges and four minutes later Paul got another from Terry Hedges to end the scoring in the second period. Paul' Reed blasted in another this time from Pete Kruhkert and with just 23 seconds left in the game Bowmanville slipped one past goalie Dan Mitchell to rob him of his shutout. Consolation Champions - Orono Bantams. On Friday, December 3th, the Bantams went to Oakwood to participate" O .M.H.A. Bantams United County Atom O.M.H.A. MIDGETS O.M.H.A. Pee Wees MAIN 51T. ORONO. ONT * 9350 ým m 1 in another 8 team tourament. The fîrst game paired us with Newcastle. After three perîods of excellent hockey and the -snow hiad settled it was Orono on top by a score of 2-4. We got the first goal in the first period by Steve Stec, unassisted. Newcas- tic opened the scoring in the second period on a goal by Ken Lawson from Dan Wa ger. Shortly after Paul Reed blasted one in from Alan Webster and Duane Major. There was no scoring in the third period. This win advanced Orono to the cham pion- ship side of the tournament. The next game was against East Givillinsbury who beat us ln a tournament at Thornbury. The boys proved to themselves they should have beat them there as the score ended Orono 5-1. Paul Reed scored with Ken Prescott and Alan Webster scored from Paul Reed and Ken Prescott. In the second Terry Hedges let a single go from the point on a pass from Rob Taîsma. E.G. got a goal to end the second period. In the thîrd period- Alan Webster scored from Paul Reed and Jim Moffatt and Ken Prescott completed the scoring from Alan Webster and Paul Reed. The final game for the championship was against Oshawa L.N.H.L. Canadiahs. Paul Reed opened the-scoring fromn Duane Major ini the first periol. Oshawa got two in the second period and then Alan Webster tied it up from Ken Prescott, Robbie Taîsmna put Orono ahead again on a pass from Warren Nichoîls. Oshawa tied it up in the thiird and with just 1.37 left in the game they got the winning goal. Orono pulled the goalie for the extra attacker but just couldn't get the tieing goal so had to settle for second best. The boys have played extremely well durîng the past six games and honourable mention should go to Dan Mitcýhell, again hot in front of the mresh, and Paul King. The Newcastle Bantams, after defeating Oakwood, were battling Orne- mee for the Consolation Champinnship. After playing three ten-minute periods the score was tied at 1- 1s the gamne advanced te 5 minutes sudden death overtîmne. There was nô scoring in the suddcn death so each'- side selected five shooters for a penalty shot situation. Af ter cach side had their five shooters shoot-off, Omemee had scored two te Newcastle's one to gîve Omemcc the consolation championship.
