Board members appointed from the Town of Newcastle area include E.H. Samuel, S.B. Rutherford and Kirk Entwisle. The Region of Durham has appointed Councs. Woodyard and Gray to the Conservation Authority to represent the Town of Newcastle. In his annual report the chairman stated that the development and use of the forest centre in the Ganar- aska Forest had mushroomed even beyond expectations. He said the Forest Centre as a recreational centre for both snowmobiling and cross coun- try skiing was proving most popular with over 1000 mak- ing use of the facilities during a normal week-end. He said this part of the program was costing very little as far as local taxpayers were concer- ned as the province was providing a sum of $74000.00 for grooming, parking lots and other works. In the matter of school use of the facilities for residential pro- grams he said this' was developing as planned and that in the 78-79 school year it was expected that the facilit- ies will be in operation on a week to week basis for over forty weeks. The chairman also cited accomplishments during the year in the Conservation Services program, the near completion of aIl master plans for the various conser- vation areas. AIl plans, he said, have been completed with two remaining to have f inal approval by the author- ity and the Ministry. He also stated that the initial steps had been taken towards a flood warning system and flood contigency plans. Flood plain mapping of the entire watershed area will be completed early in 1978. He also noted that the Athority had completed a 'green belt study for -the Village of Newcastle and this would be presented to the Town of Newcastle for their consider- ation in the very near future. I I I arn writing to you at this time due to certain letters 1 have seen in the news media recently regarding Sam Cur- eatz, M.P.P. First of al I would advise you that I did not support or vote for Sam in the election - a fact of which hie was well aware. Secondly the day after the election 1 phoned Sam at his home and congratulated him on his successful bid. I also advised him that in anything lie was doing that 1 thought correct I would support him and also anything hie was doing that 1 thought was not correct I would not support him and hie would know it. We have an amicable arrange- ment, at least temporarily, as far, as 1 am concerned. Now these letters asking for his resignation are complet- ely beyond my understand- ing. 1. Now let us first recognize that hie is a newcomer to Queen's Park and as such is probably given that type of recognition in Queen's Park. 2. This Committee that hie was appointed to dealing with Automobile Insurance for instance is not a new Commit- tee. As a new member to that Committee hie does not set the procedures and expenses etc. himself. However hie is a member of that, Committee and it is lis duty to us and himself to participate to the fullest -and have firsthand knowledge of the subject. The criticism being placed on him is not completely justified - how about the Government in power and those at the chairman levels that create the procedures etc. 3. The matter of the $1,000.00 Housing Grant, which he has paid back, could be a normal error. He has stated lie made an error. However in adding an approximate $50,000.00 addition to a small property maybe it would be natural to be of the opinion that you were just finishing up the, small property you had pur- chased into the type of home you intended. I am not saying what was done was correct but I am saying is that to ask for his resignation for samne is not understandable to me. I do not intend to defend Sam Cureatz. I am certain he is learning to do this himself. I am however suggesting that people place themselves in the above circumstances that they have written about and see how they then feel about these two matters and the COMMITTEE ENDORSES TAX REFORM (Continued from page 1) additional information so that a more indepth analysis could be performed for the Town of Newcastle. Klaas DeGroot, treasurer informed the committee that it appeared under the new system that the Region of Durham and the Town of Newcastle would be net henefactors but that there was a need for better and more accurate information to determine the individual pluses and minuses through- out the municipality. This information is expect- resultant reme, a totally unacceptable situa t- ion rectified. Again I advise you 1 do not edy that they vote for Sam but 1 suUgest to called f or in these letters. Let me advise you that at the present time, at my request,, Sam Cureatz is involving himself in a subj ect that effects a number of people in this area. He has taken initial steps to see if he can be of assistance in having you and even request you to take another look at this entire matter. I believe citi- zens should express their opinions - let us be construct- ive in our expressions and criticisms. Sincerely, Keith D. Barr, Citizen.
