"Hope you read the book first, Nancy" A public meeting held in Orono last Thursday by the Planning and Development Committee of the Town of Newcastle came out in sup- port of the development of a shopping plaza in Orono according to a vote taken of those in attendance at the meeting. The meeting was addressed by Mr. Kostka on behalf of the Armstrong Brothers promoting the shop- ping centre in the north-east corner of the Village. The Shopping Plaza as proposed by Armstrong Store would centre around a new IGA store with a floor. area three times the size of the present store. It was also pointed out that the ultimate retail area in the shopping plaza would be some 61,500 square feet with the initial stage being 21,000 square feet. Parking facilities with com- pletion of the plaza would provide parking for 275 cars. This would be scaled down in accordance with need in the first phase. There would be no access to the plaza from Highway 115 but access, 2-way, would be provided from Mill Street near the intersection with Millson Hill Drive. It was pointed out by Kostka that such a develop- ment would add a stimulous to Orono, provide a factor of growth and put Orono back on the map as a business centre. He also said the trading area would be up to ten miles outside the Orono Village. In the matter to what stores would locate in the shopping area, Kostka said it was really not known at this time as they could not hold to any time as to completion of the project at this date. Council- lor Dykstra also said it was impossible to reveal names but that developers would be trying to locate stores not already in Orono. The devel- .opment would proceed ac- cording to demand for space in the shopping area. It was pointed out at the meeting that water was in sufficient supply in Orono to service the development and that adequate arrangements had been made for sewage disposal with the Ministry of Health. It was also dispelled that the area was in the flood plain and that drainage could be engineered to take care of the concerns of the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Ganaraska. It was reported that there was a lot of negative views expressed in the Howden report which bas been filed with the committee. Robert Bolton, principal, he said the graduating stu- dents would be missed and that the staff at the school had been remarking how well the students had advanced over the year. Mr. Bolton said the students had worked well together and their academic achievements were most evident. It was also pointed out that the school and students had competed well when in com- petition with other similar schools in the area. "You have had confidence in your- self', he said, and this is most important for if you believe in yourself you can obtain your goals. Mrs. Marg. Ridge Kinsmen exchanges Estates make feelings known Residents from the Orono Estates attending a meeting of the Planning and Develop- ment committee held in Orono last Thursday evening favoured the retention of Lot 21 at the south of the sub-division to continue as a walkway from the develop- ment to Orono Village. In retaining the lot as a walkway residents felt that it could be developed as a Tot Lot with possible flower gardens and benches. The group also favoured the use of land, Block F, on the west side of the west entrance onto Taunton Road to be used for building purposes provid- ing the building purposes, were for single family dwel- lings. It was pointed out to those in attendance that Lot 21 could be used as a building lot and still leave ample room for a paved walkway along the cemetery fence. Counc. Dyk- stra in chairing the meeting said the walkway would be maintained during the entire year. le said such a use would eliminate the weed condition that now exists. It was felt both by the chairman and Planning Director Kris- toff that the area was too small for park purposes. It was pointed out that present by-laws would have to be amended to use Lot 21 as a building lot and a fenced walkway.
