CONVENTION REPORT Between 700 and 800 dele- gates plus visitors from U.S.A., Quebec,, Nova Scotia and London, England enjoyed the annual horticuitural con- vention, held this year at the Queens University, Kingston. The theme, "Horticulture, A Common Bond," was clearly depicted throughout the 3 day convention. Wednesday evenings pro- gram of a Coliegiate bands, a "Sweet Adelines" ladies chor- us of 48 ladies plus 5 ethnic groups performing, was thor- oughly enjoyabie. Thursday morning brought the presidents address, and welcome and bis opening remarks brought a hearty chuckle as he stated he hadn't time to take off his storm windowýs yet after piânting over 10,000 piants the last two weeks. He informed everyone of the growing number of societies in the province, now 250, with 50 to 60,000 mem- bers. The province is ever increasing its grants to keep encouraging more beautifi- cation and programs. Horti- culture is realiy a common bond, as every nationality profession and age can enjoy its many benefits. The theme speaker for Thursday morning was again an old frîend of many in the person of Mr. P.J. Peters of Manitoba. Mr. Peters is with the dept. of Agriculture of Manitoba and also Sec. Treas. of the Provinciai horticulture. Mr. Peters address began of course with his excellent reciting of bis beautiful poet- ry. Our members will be hearing some of thîs poetry later. 'Ur. Peters address, following the theme, "A Common Bond", warned us that we must not leave politicians to bring about Canadian unity, we, each one personally mnust light a match to ignite one large fiame to increase our chances for a better road to unity. He urged ail community groups, e.g. Women Institutes, Chamber of Céommerces, Church groups, etc. to bond together for greater strength, in build- ing a stronger Canada. Many exciting panels were heard on various topics and panelists from England, Que- bec, Nova Scotia and U.S.A. were ail exceptional. Two new 0.11.A. awards were made this year, on Friday evening the first to Inca Metals, for Northern Ontario, for their splendid contribution to beautification programs, and the 2nd award to MacDonalds food chains f or their excellent iandscaped stores. An amusing little item foilowing- the MacDonalds award was the large crowd breaking into song, "We do it aIl for you". The Friday, evening speaker was Dr. C. M. Sw itzer, dean of O.A.C., Guelph. He had just returned from Australia and New Zealand, and mentioned the use of fiowers and vegetables on the iawns, throughout Europe. Many visitors took the opportunity of conducted bus tours and aiso boat tours of Kingston and areas. Mrs. Thelma Vagg, Mrs. Minnie Zegers and Mr. and Mrs. O. Challice were dele- gates from Orono. ORONO ESTATES (Continued fromn page 1) considerable support for the land being used for deveiop- ment of a park as there was a similar support for the land to be used for single residential homes. In a vote taken of those present the edge went to residential development. Tt was pointed out that again this area was not large enough for a community park but that could be deveioped as a Tot Lot. The fact that the land abutted an entrance into the, Orono Estates there was concern expressed over dan- gçr to children from traffic. Manyof the residents stili objected to any commercial development on the land and also expressed the need for improvements to the ent- rance and some form of cleanup and beautification. Ilt was felt that residential development in the area would be a great improve- ment to that that now exsts. t was stated at the meeting that a good portion of Block F was in the floodpiain and that already some of the houses built in the sub-division were withîn the same flood plain. Lt was pointed out also that the creek area was a source area for the Orono Creek and that further development into this area could have an adverse flow of the Orono Creek which hield aesthetic value when passing through' the Orono Park. It was also feit that tree Phone 983-9502 The Most Famous'Basket cover around the Orono Estates was a deîinite value in the beauty of the setting and that thiÉ shouid not be destroyed. The matter will now corne before the Pl-nning Commit- tee, possib- on July ith, when a recoli i endation wil be made to council for action. Attention Farniers! WHY PAY MORE?
