Park renamed to honor A. Carruthers Last week the council of Hope Township renamed the Garden Hill1 park to honour a former resident of Garden Hill, Mr. Alex Carruthers. The park located on the south side of County Road 9 in Garden Hlli and across from the Garden Hill Conservation area has been renamed "The Alex Carruthers Memorial Park". For some months a group of citizens in the area have been raising funds to improve the Orono Weeklv Times, Wednesday, July 12th. 1978-5 ,rike may affect completion date of Arena facilities at the park as well as expanding the park with an additional two acres. These plans include a track, a soccer field, bail diamonds, tennis courts and such as horse shoe pitches. The group are out to raise $5,600 for the first stage of a work programn to provide further facilities at the park. Upon completion of ail works planned to be under- taken the cost is expected to be in the-area of $100,O0o.oo. Newcastle seating tender to be called Counc. A. Gray informed the finance committee on Monday evening that in the original contract seating in the Newcastle -arena had not been part of the contract. He said the Newcastle commit- tee was 'now ready to cal tenders for this work and wanted to see the contracet let as soon as possible. H1e saîd the seating was left out of the original contract in order that they could make sorne use of the arena last winter. "You can't have workrnen working in the building and still make use of the arena for sporting activi- ties", he said. Counc. Gray said they intended to put seating for 400 in the arena and this figure was dîctated due to the availability of parking. H1e said the cost of the work is expected to corne in around $18,000.00. Gray said the committee had approval to put in the seating and that his report was only a matter of letting the committee know what was happening. He feit the cost was within the original figures. Counc. Gray said the New- castie fund raising campaign had collected $120,000 of the total $180,000 required for the project. H1e said they expect- ed a further $50,000 to $60,000 by the end of August. Counc. Taylor said he would like to see a written report on where the Town stands to date with the arena.
