115 Fatatality 1, Nineteen year old Richard ý'ý'4' î Anthony Thompson of Bram- pton was announced dead on arrival at Memorial Hosptal in Bowmanville Sunday eve- ning following a one-car accident on Highway 115 around 8:30 p.m. The acci- dent happened just north of Station Street on Highway 115 next' to the Orono Fair Grounds. The car travelling south Iýt à býwent out of control turned over a number of timnes and came to rest on its side on the highway. Thompson, driver of the car was thrown free of the car and crushed. He was not wearing lis safety belt, l", police state. Two passengers in the car, Susan Phiîips of Mississauga 4 and Mark Lee of Agincourt î ~sUffered mîinor lacerations and bruises. Asking town to vote on region If the Town of Newcastle council should agree with the Town of Newcastle Rate- payer's Association it could mean that citizens in the Town corne November would be given an opportunity to pass their judgement on the regional system of gov- ernment. The Ratepayers Associat- ion will ask that a referendum lie held in connection with the municipal elections this Nov- ember at which time the citizens of the Town would be given a ballot te mark 'yes' or ,no' on regional government. Mr. McQuat, president of the association and a small business operator in Newton- ville lias stated that taxes have risen at least three hundred percent since in the past five years through the regional government system. He points out that services in the meantime have not mce- reased and that duplication lias become a fact and common occurance especial- ly in the public works department. The next meeting of council will be held on August l4th when the proposaI could be considered. Council to meet over1 Orono arena A special meeting of council will be held at four o'clock Wednesday afternoon of this week to further discuss the opeming of the Orono Arena. At the present timne there is some carpentry work to be completed both inside and outside the building. The view of getting tis work donle either in time for the Monte Carlo night or even the Orono Fair is creating somne grey hairs as the carpenters are out on strike. The total mili rate has been set for public school supporters at 150.61 mills. The increase is about an eight percent increase. Taxpayers in Cavan Town- ship face a 20 milI increase on their tax bill. Again the increase is ini the area of eight percent with a total mili rate of 179.3 milîs for public school supporters. ENJOY PICNIC OUTING AT PARK Last week the , children's playground program sponsored by the Social Services department of the Town- of Newcastle combined the chidren of Orono with those of Kendal. The event took place at the Orono park with a picnic lunch of hot dogs and soft drinks. The event appears to have been a most enjoyable event for everyone. ELDORADO WORKERS REJECT CONTRACT A week ago Tuesday Eldorado workers, upon recommendation of their union, rejected a contract proposal that would have given a twenty percent wage hike over a two year period. Negotiations have now broken off after an offer of 12.3 percent increase for one year was refused later in the week by the union executive. The strike is now entering its eighth week. HOLIDAY TIME AT CURVPLY Employees at Curvply, Plydesign and Nesting Furniture in the Village of Orono are now on a two week holiday with alI three plants closed for the two-week perîod. Somne bolidays at General Motors are now underway ~ethe workers in the assembly plant will start to enjoy the sun on July 3lst and for other assemnbly workers on August 7th. 1
