2-ORONO WEEKLY TIMES, W1PDNESDAY, AUGUST 2, 197 Oronto Weekly Times ALCOHOL1 EDUCATION IN GRADE 7 The Ministry of Education intends to institute educating youniger children in the dangers of alcohol due to an increase in teen-age drinking. Most will see this as a noble effort by the eductional systemn and also most will have to agree that grade 7 seems a logical place to begin. t is shortly after this that drinking problems do begin to appear which is described by the Ministry as a significant problem. Certainly the use of alcohol bas few benefits if any at ail. Its use is really a waste of time and a waste of money. Its abuse shows up in many instances throughout society and in day to day living. With heavy use it is detrimental to health and welfare of society. 0f course the schools cannot ever solve the problemn even in tbe young especially wben as adults we must always have a bar or beer garden fo)r every entertaining and recreational event. Alcohol is flaunted before the public and the young at an ever increasing number of public affairs. And in general these are often organized by our public leaders witbin the community. The effort on tbe part of the educational system is to be congratulated but as parents and elders of the community we ail have a part to play. ONLY TIME WILL TELL According to most associated with the construction of the new Arena in Orono the ultimate completion date is a matter on which there is very littie to speculate on. Tbe completion of tbe arena and community centre rests in the settiement of a contract dispute between the carpenters and joiners and the construction industry. At tbe time of writing there is no indication wben agreement may be reacbed between these two groups. Monday's papers point out that bargaining bas broken off between tbe two groups and that tbe union will not meet until Tbursday to plot strategy. One contractor, of note, bas said it will be another three weeks before any change will be noted. 0f course tbe annual fair is drawing close, only a few days more tban a month away. With three weeks work left to be completed tbe margin of time narrows and narrows with eacb passing day. The Town coundil met over tbe matter last week but their bands are tied and reaily in keeping a banda off policy tbey took the only action tbey could. Last year tbe fair operated witbout the use of the arena but did bave the old grandstand. This year if the faciities cannot be used there will also be the loss of the grandstand. 0f course the local fair does not have the stature of the CNE where carpenters have returned to the job to have the Ex ready for its first patrons. t is a matter to wait and see wbat bappens. We would sincerely hope that the new facility can be ready for tbe 1978 edition of tbe annual Durbam Central Fair in Orono. Neil Armstrong to open Plowing Match The man who took "one Tuesday, September 26. The small step" in 1969 will site is the Jim Armstrong officially open the 1978 Inter- Farm, one mile east of national Plowing Match in Wingham on Highway 86. Huron County. Organizers are very pleas- Neil Armstrong, spacecraft ed that Armstrong, now commander for Appollo 1L, professor of engineering at the first man to land and walk the University of Cincinnati, on the moon, will open this bas accepted the invitation toý years' match at 2 p.m. on (Continued page 5) A lock bas remained on the door of the booth at the Orono Park throughout the summer season and there seems littie hope that the booth will open this year. This is the first time in years that the booth bas not operated. The Social Services depart- ment of the Town of Newcas- tle bas advertised the conces- sion being available and to date have been unable to get someone interested to provide thîs service for those making use of the Orono Park either during the week or on week-ends. Activity at the Orono Park is certainly on the increase especially during the week witb the advent of L0BB bal and this will continue into September with mucb of the finals in both ladies and men's divisions being played at the park. The tennis courts are stili drawing a goodly number of possible customners as well as the swimminig program each morning dur- ing both the months of July and August. There is still the THEY GROW THEM TALL AT ORONO NURSERY time of transplanting the trees were up to six feet. Over the five month period it bas amazed everyone with its growth factor. Mr. Buntîng explained that bybrid poplar are somewhat difficuit to grow and the young plants must be started from seed. The program is still in the experimental stage. t was pointed out that natural stands of Aspen in the north faîl apart and as such are less than economical to crop. He said it would appear that a managed stand of hybrid aspen should have a greater value and be more economical to crop. The Aspen would be used for pulp and rough lumber. The Tree Nursery bas added three new greenhouses this year and Mr. Bunting points out that one green- bouse could produce at least 10,000 aspen seedlings. The greenhouses are also being used to produce- a more acceptable white spruce seed- ling for delivery across the province. Mr. Bunting said the aspen project is looking most suc- cessful and it will be interest- ing to see how the young trees' make out after being planted in Kapuskasing in northern Ontario. He said the new hybrid aspen has little sîmîl- arity to the natural stock.
