"The Lord thy God bringeth thee into a good land; a land flowing with milk and honey, wherein thou mayest eat bread without scarceness". We had a wonderful ramn on Saturday, August 2th. Those who watered their tomatoes during the long dry speil in June and July now have wonderful tomnatoes and the new corn is most delicious. Between sixty-five and sev- enty turned out to the Couples' Corn Roast at the home of Mr. Jack Stapleton north of Kendal on Sunday afternoon. Dr. Os- boumne was born on the farmn where the training school 110w stands. He attended Bowman- ville High Sehool, became principal of Whitby Ladies College and is an organist and a musical doctorate as well as being an ordained minister. He was secretary of the joint Committee who compiled the new hymnbook. Rev. A. Tizzard said for a littie variation this morning he would tell us the story of three great hymns as given by Dr. Stanley Osbourne. We could get along in our worship services if we had only the Bible which was Written over a period of eleven or twelve hundred years. We find in our hymn book that one author was born in 340 A.D., another was born in 1949. That is people have been wvriting hymns for 1609 years. All these words could be read as poetry. However they have been improved by musical tUnes. Number 355, "We love the place O God", W'as the first hymnn to be written in Canada by Wm. Bulloch. In 1822 he returned to Trinity Bay as, a rector. Ia 1941 he became rector of Digby, Nova Scotia. The second one was number 164, "Jesus shal Tapung - Spray Ceilings Plaster Repair Painting WaIIy Lucyk 983-551$ ORONO WE I A WOA Wl/O 00 sr /:#T// ',VO uNcé. OG. Chatterton lpectical Contracting phione Kendal News Orono Weekvly Tines, Weýdnesday. auKust 23rd, 1979-9 1 reign", which is a hyn based on the thoughts of the 72 psalm composed by King David. Now King David sang in verse 8, "He shail have dominion also from sea to sea and from the river unto the ends of the earth". This refers to God's Kingdom. Jesus is not 'mentioned in the old testament. 50 Sir Isaac Watt says his son, "Jesus the Christ shahl reign where er the sun doth hi s successive journey's run. His Kingdomn stretch from shore to shore", and so on to the end of the hymn. Now David of course played on his harp and sang thîs psalm. So we enjoy this message and remember it so much better if we sing it. It was first published in 1719 by James Watt. The third hymn we enjoyed was 156, "Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord"'. This was written by a lady school tèacher Julia Ward Howe. She was born in New York in 1819. She went with lier minister to view the trooping of the colours. They listened to the singing of the troops. They sang, "John Brown's body lies a moulding in the grave, But his soul goes marching on". Her minister said go home and compose another hymn to that tune. -The tune is called "The battle hymn of the, Republic". Her hymn was firstincluded in our new hymn book in 1971. The children love, "Glory, glory, hal-le-lu-jah". The fourth and ast hymn we sang was, "Wil your anchor hold", composed by another schooh teacher Jane Oweni who taught in Balti- more, Maryland.. She was a Sunday Schooh worker for more than fi! ty years. She asked a young man who was learning to be a carpen- ter to compose a suitable tune. He was Wmn. James Kirkpatrick. He went on and composed forty-seven books of sacred tunes. He lived from 1838 to 1921 to hear this tune sung around the world espec- ially near the sea. Mr. and Mrs. Reg Eliott held a famîly picnic at the town hall park in Port Hope on Sunday afternoon. Fifteen 'attended-, We were pleased to have Mr. and Mrs. R.
