The three-storey building housing Stedmans Depart- mient Store and a number of unused apartments above the store was completely gutted by the fire which took until 2:30 a.m. to put out, The fire was reported at 8:00 p.rn. There was no injuries resulting frorn the fire which requîred three Newcastle pumpers and an aerial ladder truck frorn Oshawa to contain the fire within the building. Sorne srnoke damage resulted in the Coronation Cafe to the east and the Bowmanville PUC office to the west. Orono firefighters were placed on caîl for a good part of the evening in case of other fire calîs within the Town of Newcastle. They were at the Orono hall from 8:45 to 11:30 p.m., It is strongly suspected that the fire was started deliberat- ely in a pile of cartons at the back of the store.
