Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, August 23rd, 1978-7 Orono Tigers ready for 1979 season Tigers have good season During the summer, 4-H club members in the agricul- tural part of the program have been attending meetings and carrying out their pro- jects in the various clubs. The wrap-up to the 4-H year, as far as projects are concerned, is the Achievement Day for the various clubs. There are a number of these coming up at the various fall fairs, as well as for individual 4-H clubs in the county. The 4-H Sheep, Swine and Beef Clubs will hold their achievement day in conjunc- tion with Blackstock Fair on Saturday, August 26. In addition, each agricultural clubs in the county will be placing a public exhibit in exhibit area at Blackstock Fair. The 4-H Farm and home safety club will be holding their Achiev- ment Night at the agricultur- ai office in Bowmanville on August 30. Each member of the club will give a 3 to 4 minute preentation on some aspect of farm and home safety. On Tuesday, Septem- ber 5th, The Durham 4-H Farm Management Club will be holding their Achievement Night at the Agricultural Dffice, with each club mem- Der giving a presentation on some aspect of farm manage- rnent that was covered during the past year. In addition, club members will turn in a written report on their pre- sentation. The Durham Cen- tral Fair at Orono will host a number of 4-H club achieve- ment days, starting on Sept- ember 8th. Again, each of the 4-H agricultural clubs in Durham County will place an exhibit in the 4-H and-Junior Farmer display area. The 4-H Dairy, Landscape Gardneing, Field Crops and Rabbit Clubs, will hold their achievement days during Orono Fair. In addition, the 4-H Sheep club will be having their annual Wether Lamb Show and Sale on Friday, September 8th. In addition, each member of the 4-H Sheep Club will display a fleece and these will also be auctioned off at the Wether Lamb and Market Steer Auction on Friday evening, September 8th. Finally, the Hope 4-H Calf Club will be holding their Acheivement Day in conjunction with Port Hope Fair on Saturday, September 16th. Again, there will be a 4-H display area where the 4-H agricultural club exhibits will be located. On a regional basis, the Central 4-H Championship show for top finishers in county Achievement Days, will be held at the Lindsay Central exhibition on Thurs- day, September 21st. Fisk, coach; Derek Mumford, Achievement day part of Orono fair Tne orono Tigers wound up their 1978 season with a play-off tournament on Satur- day, August 19 in Bowman- ville. The boys first game was against the Bowmanville Mets and the teams played to a 10 all tie. In the bottom of the first overtime inning Derek Mumford came up with a home run to win the game 11-10. The second game was played against undefeated Newcastle with the boys tying this game as well with a 7-7 score. This time in the bottom of the second overtime inning Mike Lane hit a home run Open 115 new (Peterborough Bypass) Minister of Transportation and Communications James Snow will officially open Highway 115 New on August 25, 1978. The ribbon-cutting cere- mony will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Highway 115N, near the junction of Highways 28 and 115N, with a number of municipal officials in attend- ance. Completion of this new two-lane extension from Highway 28 to Highway 7 and the Queensway will relieve Highway 28 of the heavy volume of summer and winter recreational traffic. In addition, it will provide improved access to the indus- trial area in the southern portion of the city. Awarded under contract 77-37 to Beaverdale Construc- tion Company Ltd. of Cob- ourg, the cost of the 6.2 km (3.9 mile) highway was $2.5 million. driving in two homeruns to take the game 10-7. The Tigers final game was against the Bowmanville Expos with our boys coming up on the short end of a 8-4 score. All the boys played super ball making the tournament an exciting three games. The Tigers had a good season and are looking forward to next season. The boys would like to thank Brian Collins and Fred Fisk for all the time they spent coaching them this year.
