The weatber was perfect for the outdoor pro- gram consisting of speeches, flag raising, tree planting, old time fiddlers contest, sing,, song etc. Inside tbe school were sketches of the eighteen rural schools of Clarke Town- sbip painted by Maureen Remington. Most of these schools are now tomn down or made into homes so these beautiful sketches bave bis- toric value. The ladies of Kirby had made a quilt witb all the former teacbers and music teachers names mns- cribed around the sketch of Kirby school. Wben, you attend Orono Fair it will be posted in the quilt section. One of the names of a former teacher of Kirby school on this quilt was Thomas Stan- ton. He later became Sir Thomas Stanton, one-,of the world's greatest doctors. He was born at Kendal, bis father was a storekeeper. He passed is entrance when eleven years old. Then he'attended Port Hope High Scbool. One day at noon he said be passed a group of teachers. He overbeard one say, "What's tbat baby doing bere". At sixteen' he had graduated and was teaching at Kirby Scbool. He walked the f ive miles from Kendal to Kirby each day till freeze up. So Mrs. James Waniian tolti me, he was bier first teacher. He also taught Mr. Wm. Rutherford who was Syd Rutherford's father. In those days around 1895 the teacher didn't get paid til11 Christmas so he saved boar-d money by walking tbe ten miles a day. When be had saved enougb to attend medi- cal college he went , o Toronto graduating f rom Trinity Med- ical College in 1899. He was a cousin of Mrs. Mary Quant.- rihi. Mr. Everett Brown took part in the program. He had attended Kirby school so bad bis great grandfatber. Tbe original scbool was a log building, a frame school had been erected in 1878. A barbeque supper was provid- ed at f ive o'clock, a square dancing demonstration at 8 p.m. and dancing in the big> new centennial gymnasium till midnight.
