Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, September 20th, 1978 Money required for sidewalk machine Orono hall charges levied Way cleared for Orono report At a recent meeting of the Planning and Development committee for the Town of Newcastle the director of planning, Mr, Kristof, report- ed that the report on the Armstrong Shopping Centre in Orono was being held Up until such time as he could meet with members of the Orono Chamber of Commerce and downtown businessmen. Mr. Kristof met in Orono with representatives of down- town businessmen last Wed- nesday and it is now expected that hîs report on the propos.- ed shopping centre will be handed to the planning com- mittee within two weeks. The next meeting of the commit- tee is scbeduled for October 2nd at 7:00 p.m. -At th1e meeting- in Gr43nn, Kristof said as a planner he saw no reason why the. p roposed shopping centre could not go ahead. The site plan agreement which must be draf ted may point up somne excessive costs which could determine the financial feas- ibiîity of the scheme, it was pointed out but in this nothingý was showing up at this timne. It bas been said that Kristof did admit that if land was avaîlable ini the downtoWn area for the shopping centre' and for parking that such a site would be more sultable. In speaking with Mr. Wm. Armstrong be said he was confident that the schemne would go abead and that iii fact they had purchased additional land in the area so that a suitable entrance could be developed to the complex. He did feel that the election could hold up the develop- ment at this point but was bopeful that this did not happen. At the Oro emeigwi*4h the director of planning it was pointed out that some re-ý development may be neces- sary on a portion of Mill Street which at the present time is rather narrow to sustain increased traffic. Three way race in Bowmanville At least three candidates will be seeking the regional council seat on the Town of Newcastle council from the Bowm-aniville Ward. This seat I is presently held by Counc. Dykstra who is to vacatle the seat in bis bid to be elected mnayor of the Town of New7,castle of., election day. RECOMVMENDED FOR ANOTHER TERMI S.B. Rutherford bas been recommended for another four year ternyas a Durham Region representative on the board of governors of Durham College. Mr. Rutherford bas completed one four-year termn on the board. ORONO WALK-A-THON The Oronio Figure Skating Club is holding their annual Walk-A-Thon this Saturday with funds raised tbrougb the event going to the Club and with a portion to be donated to the Orono Arena Fund. The Walk-A-Tbon covering some thirteen miles will commence at tbe Orono Parkand end at the samne point. The walk commences at 8:00 a.m. ARTHRITIS WEEK A general canvass for funds will be held in the Orono area commenicing next week September 25th during Artbritîs Week. Your support of the canvass would be appreciated. Mrs. Margaret Mercer is chairmran of the canvass and will provide further information if requested. PUBLIC SCHOOL ENROLMENT DROPS Enrolment in the Orono-Lockharts scbool system bas dropped somne twenty-five students from Septemrber 1977 to September 1978. In 1977 there were 385 students enrolled in the two schools while the figure dropped to 360 in September of 1978. Enrolment at the Pines Senior Public School b'as ý"opped to 358 this September 1978 compared to 367 at the end ý- June 97. Enrolment at the Clarke Higb Scbool for September 1978 is 603 compared with 594 in September of 1977. Enrolinent at the end of June 1978 rested at 530 at the Clarke lligh Sehool. Novemnber l3tb. Former mayor of the Town of Bowmanville and former regional councillor for the Town of Newcastle, Ivan Hobbs is also seeking to (Continued to page 2) Region of Durham travel survey The Planning Department of the Regional Municipality of Durham in c-operation with the Ontario Minîstry of Transportation and Com- munications bas inîtiated a region-wide Travel Survey to obtaini information on the present travel patterns of Durham resîdents. According to Mr. Walter Beath, Chairman of the Region of Durham, "This is the first comprehensive region-wide survey of per- sonal travel patterns in Dur- ham. The information obtain- ed fromn the survey will be utilized in planning studies at the provincial, regional and municipal level and will benefit ail three levels of government". A recommenda- tion fromn the public works department suggested that the Town undertake snow removal on designated side- walks which in the past bas been done under contract. The public works commit- tee recommendation wotld require the Town to purchase snow-removal equipment and to hire an additional tbree men. The cost of the equip- menitwas estimated at $19,000 with the three additional staff costing $11,000.
