ORONO, ONT. 93I00 and, Orono parent's groups assisted with the purchase of a new video tape recorder. It will be shared between both buildings of the Orono- Lockhart schooi. The video tape recorder will ho demon- strated for parents of both communities at Lockhart on Thursday, September 28 and at Orono on October 5, during evening community-parent meetings. In observance of the twini- ning concept, pupils from both buildings are participat- ing in an Orono-Lockhart school crest contest. The winning crest wili be selected by Mrs. Mary Gibson of the Lockhart Parent-Teacher Association, Mrs. Gerri Bai- ley of the Orono Home and Sehool Association and Mr. J. Reid, school principal. Crea- tive writing and bulletin board displays will be part of the school crest contest. The theme for the Orono- Lockhart twinning is "Together We'reBetter", a phrase which was coined by staff member John Wither- idge. Funds for senior citimens Council passed a resolution on Monday in which council wilprovide a sumn of $15-00 per month for the balance of 1978 to senior citizens groups in the Town of Newcastle. The money is to be used to defray the cost of accommod- ation. The grant was expanded following a request from the Newtonville Senior Citizens for financial assistance to pay for accommodation. Counc. Taylor stated that if such a grant was to be given it should be available for all such groups in the Town of Newcastle, Council supported the proposai. Fair winners These seven chiidren were top winners in their respec- tive classes in the Junior department at the recent Orono Fair. Prof essional activity day Teachers from Oroao- Lockhart and other. area teachers will participate in a full day of professional activi- ties at Kirby Centennial School on Friday, September 29. The study topics' will in- volve participation in activi- ties related to the Ministry curriculum guideline - "Edu-' cation In -the Primary and Junior Division". This first P.A. day wlll focus on the parts of the guideliae which deal with Physical Elducation, Draina, Music and Visual Arts. Future Profesional Acti- vity days this year will emphasize other parts of the Ministry. guideline for Pri- mary and Junior teachers. House League Program Commences The House League program has begun for students in the Orono-Lockhart School. Both the Orono and Loekhart pupils have selected House teams in which they will participate Ithroughout the school year. House teams have various names and crests selected by the pupils, Student gain mentV points throughout the year for parti- cipation in House activities. Junior age pupils comprise- the Major House League which includes a Minor House League of Primary-age pupils. Soccer competition among the. various bouse teams has occupied much of the extracurricular program. Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, September 27th, 1978-3 Four-point dental p la n sta rted A four-point dental health program has been initiated in the Orono-Lockhart Sehool. Point one consists of white milk sales to nomon lunch pupils. Point two is a dental brushing program for al students who remain at school for lunch. Pointthree is flouride rinsing. Following the distribution of parent consent forms, a flouride rinsing program will begin for pupils from Grade One to Grade Five. Point four in the dental program is the dental nutrition program which is conducted hv each teacher in the classroom. Periodic visits by dental health nurses, assist the teachers in this area. The four points of the Orono-Lockhart dental health program will be outlined in separa te presentations at the Lockhart Parent-Teacher meeting on Thursday, Sept- ember 28 and at the Orono Op)en House on October 5. .Dental supplies and con- sultant services are provided through Dr. K. At school, many art activi- ties, creative writing lessons and other parts of the school program provided follow-up for the annual fair. Dupuis, Vice-Principal; Mrs. M. Hadley, Librarian, explained features of a public library and each pupil was allowed ta take out a. book on a boan basis. The services of the Clarke Library will supple- ment extensive library facili- ties at the Orono-Lockhart School. Secondary student assists infdergarten Miss Michelle Major, a student from Clarke High School, has been assisting Mrs. Staples with her after- noon Kinidergarten program.
