8-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, September 27th, 1978. VAN BELLE ON GARDENING The most asked-about question this time of year What makes a good bed for fail Dutch bulbs? Most bulbs love a well drained soul and prefer a light location. To improve the bed mix a well rotted compost or peatmoss and manure through the soul and add a fertilizer with a high phosphorus, contests such as bonemeal to. help the root system of the bulbs develop. In heavy dlay soils some sand added to the bed will give it the added drain- age which is required. When should bulbs be planted. Fali bulbs can be planted right up until the ground freezes, but it is wise to get the smailer bulbs planted first such as the crocus, anemone etc. The iast -bulbs to be planted are the tulip bulbs since they can stand more frost than the smaller bulbs and of course they are the bulbs that should be planted the deepest. What is wrong with my lawn? It dried up with the extreme heat this summer, so' we let it go, but when the rains came in the end of August the lawn did not come back, and now it is almost completely gone what can we do? Likely the problem is chinchbugs which are at the fresh green shoots at the base of the grass and lef t you with a brown lawn. It is interesting to note that out of every ten calis about lawn problems, at least 8 had problems with the chinchbug. To control use a spray containing sevin or diazonon, or apply a fertilizer which contains dursban, this will control the bug. To repair the lawn take a hard rake and rake out the dead thatch and reseed with a- guod grade of grass seed and this can still be done at this time of the year right Up until the end of September. Are evergreenfs better planted in the faîl than in the spring? Yes, the cooler temp- erature makes fali an ideal time to plant evergreens. They have a chance to become well established and will take right off in the spring time. Since evergreens are green ail year and don't drop their foliage, faîl plant- ing will also give you colour during the months when you need it most. Certain plants are better planted in the spring such as clump birch, and any sof t tree that would start to grow too much in the fail and will suffer from winter damage. When should geraniums be brought inside? There are various ways to save the geranium plant, with al different home remedies if 1 may cali them. They include bringing them in bare root and hanging them upside down in the basemnent, to bringing them in bushel baskets and just leaving themn in the basement with- an occasional watering. My feel- ing is that the best method is to bring in one or two good dlean plants and then take cuttings and use the cuttings as a base to take cuttings from throughout the winter and use themn for next year's Dave's Plu mbing Heating ElIectric Industrial - Commercial 786-2471 RI.R. i Orono planting. We have a -lot of impatiens, can we bring them indoors and grow themn inside? Yes, impatiens are sof t stem plants and will adept very weIl to the environment in the home. You can either take some cuttings or bring in the whole plant and prune them back severely and repot them into a good soil mix to grow indoors. In this case it would be wise to spray the plant with an indoor plant insecti- cide, so that there are no insects brought into the bouse from outside. Until next week, happy gardening. @m mmmm - mmmmu mme *DX SERVICE STATION * Highway 35& 115, just north of Newcastle Featuring: j ~ Premium Quality Products At the Most Reasonable l * PricesI * Diesel 011 Available in any quantity I Phone 987-4215 I I e ha 've a complete lune of* *POP-CITY Soft' Drinks.
