6-Oi ono Weekly Times, Wednesday, October 25th, 1978 Oron-%o- Lockha rt News Parent Volunteers active Two separate planning meetings were held recently in the Orono-Lockhart school for in-school volunteers in each area. Mr. Reid, principal, outlin- ed aims and objectives of the volunteer program and dis- cussed the levels of involve- ment of parents within the twinned school program. A lengthy list of parent volun- teers is active in both school settings. Several excursions have been held recently and are upcoming at the Orono- Lockhart School. Grade Two pupils at Orono visited the Old Kirby School and their twinned Lockhart School. This excursion was part of a study of the School Environment. Grade Three pupils at Orono will go on a walking excursion to see the buildings of Orono. Special emphasis will be placed on Orono family names and on the old and new aspects of the village. Mrs. Staples' Kindergarten pupils will go on the annual pumpkin field excursion. Following the Primary excursion to the apple orchard the Grade one pupils made applesauce as part of their excursion follow- up activities. Parent-School ,Meetings HeId A Parent-Teacher 'Meeting at Lockhart and a Home and School Meeting and open House at Orono featured a variety of school information presentations. Orono Home and School President, Mrs. G. Bailey and Lockart Parent- Teacher Association Chair- man, Mrs. M%. Gibson, assist- ed staff members in their respective schools, witlh the meeting programs. The var- iety of presentations which were held at each school included: (a) a dental pre- sentation by Dr. K. Ambroz- aitis (b) a demonstration of the Orono-Lockhart video tape recorder, by Vice-princi- pal Mr. J. Dupuis (c) a slide presentation about Primary- Junior curriculum and (d) an information presentation by the parent club executive in each area. School excursions supplement classroom 1activities A Primary level Harrier, involving students from the Orono and Lockhart schools will be held at Orono School. The short harrier race will emphasize participation and enjoyment within the twinned school, competition Soccer is held during noon hours at both Orono and Lockhart schools. Inter-squad competition within the twin- ned schools will take place during the latter part of October and early November. Gymnastics Clubs have begun at both schools. Mrs. Deremo and Mr. Eamnes will hold gymnastic work-outs at their individual schools and in joint gymnastic sessions for each of the twianed schools. Pupils' Creative Writing: Three submissions are in- cluded for publication. The Fish Club report was comn- pleted by Orono student journalists, Lisa Harness and Nýancy Tamblyn. '*The Old Witch" was written by Grade Two stu- dents Brett Burdett. The Grade Five excursion report was completed by Orono student journalist, Caroline McCarthy. Autumn activities Many autumn activities are taking place at Orono- Lockhart school, during this term. Grade one and two pupils at Lockhart visited the apple orchard. Mrs. McBride's class completed a colourful Hallowe'en mural and an accompanying story of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Mrs. McClure's pupils have a seasonal display of hand- crafted owls which are on display on the corridor bul- letin-board. Mr. Witheridge's class at Orono have completed some interesting leaf art designs and Mrs. Staple's Kindergar- ten pupils have made some dried apple carvings. Farm Excursion 1 was interviewing Debbie Abramoff from Mrs. Lunn's class. Mrs, Lunn's Grade five class went on an excursion two weeks ago. They saw pigs, sheep, beef cattie, dairy cattle. They visited swine, beef, dairy and sheep farms. They feed the animals hay, oats, wheat, barley and mixed grains. 1 asked Debbie what activities took place: "We fed animals. We saw machines and we saw how they milked cows and what thiey'\ did to 'runts', replied Debbie. Debbie said that she enjioyed the farm trip very rnuch. Lockhart parents wilI have an opport- Fluoride rinsing to begin Most flouride rinsing con- sent forma have been return- ed to the Orono-Lockhart Sehool. Classes in both sehools will begin the rinsing program at the end of this month. Parent volunteers will meet with dental health personnel and later these volunteers and staff members will supervise -the rinsing program. The Fish Club In Orono-Lockhart Public School there is a group called the Fîsh Club. The group was formed by Mr. Reid, principal of the twinned schools. The kinds of fish the fish club have are Mollies, Catfish, Sword- tails, an Algea-eater and somne new guppies. They went to get the fish about a week or. two ago. They went to Hampton to get'them. There are some fish in Mrs. Staples roomn, Mr. Witheridge's room and the library study room. There are 20 to 25 guppies. There are 7 big fish. 'Tanks' to the fish club are kept very dlean. Lisa Harness and Nancy Tamblyn, Old Witch One day there was a good old witch. Two people were walking and met the witch. The people said, "you look ugly!" That made the witch very angry s0 she turned the people into very ugly caterpil- lars. The people did not like that. They wished that they had neyer said that. The good witch said that they had to do a good deed to turn back into people. The people dis- cussed it together and they found some ants. The ants were having trouble earrying things so the caterpillers helped themn. The good witch saw them and turned themn into people.
