It was fine for Newtonville Anniversary which a lot of the Kendal folk attended, some of them one hour early for the service. Rev. Robert Bartlett chose as his topic, "Things do happen in church". He refer- red to the early days of these two ehurches as recorded in Mrs. Agnes Burley's book. He said, "If we had attended an anniversary in Newtonvllle perhaps a hundred years ago we would not have been welcomned by "Chimies and an organ prelude", because no instrument was allowed in the church except a tuning fork, till the year 1868 when an organ was permnitted to be installed in' Presbyterian churches. I donot know who led the singing of the psalsm in Newtonville but I do know Who led the singing in Graf ton' as it was this writer's grandfather, John McBride. He was called the Pre- centor and he pitched the tunes wîth the aid of a tuning fork and led the singing from the time he was fifteen till lie was thirty-f ive. The picture of his church is the last one on your United Church Calen- dar, St. Andrew's United Church, Grafton, Ontario. A social hour was enjoyed after the service when we met people from Welcome, Gar- den Hill, Bowmanville and other places. Next Sunday there will be a Baptismal Service in Kendal church and Sunday School will be re-' sumned. Remember the U.C.W. Country Fair or Bazaar on November.8th at 2:30 p.m. in Kendal church. A number of ladies went to Newtonville on October 25th to see the pictures shown by the Mayor and Mrs. Rickard of their trip to the Soviet Union and other places. The ramn w>as so very heavy that night that others stayed homne. Those that attended enjoyed the pictures. The Kendal Women's Insti- tand- rsion. job. 1, ac.
