The success of the Town, he said, rests with. unity throughout yet with the various areas maintaining their own identity. No other area bas done what we have done and Mr. Rickard spoke of the involve- ment of people with the town to buiid swimming pools, arenas and community cen- tres. I3th Council calis special meeting A speciai meeting of council has been called for 4:45 Thursday afternoon to con- sider a recommendation from the Orono Arena Committee regarding the installation of a 54" storm sewer pipe under the race track south of the Orono arena and,,to extend westward to allow the devel- opment of a parking lot. Monday council received a request fromn the arena comn- mittee askîng that a contract be let to Ron Robinson in an amount of $12,335.00 fo, the installation of the storm sewer. The committee point- ed out that the tender specification had been met by Robinson and that an addit- ional precast manhole had been included which was feit desirable. The Robinson price was noted not the lowest but due to additional manhole was preferred. The low price of $12,000 was submitted by Tripp Construction. Counc. Dykstra asked if the addition was extra to the work', described in. the specifi- cations. He said the lowest tender, Tripp Construction, culd add. a small amount for the-ma'nhoie and stilTibeIo*. the Robinson price. H1e also asked what legal aspects this could have for council? The Town Manager said he thought the extra was an additional man-hole but did flot see the specifications. H1e said he was handed fihe document Frirkýj afternoon. Coune. Holliday said he had read the specifications and there was no documentary evidence to collaberate an additionaî manhole. "It could be completely irresponsible to pass this," lie said. Counc. Alun said council would be lef t wide open if they accepted this recommend- ation. 1Counc. Woodyardsaid it did put council in a poor position. He suggested that council get back to the commnittee anid that a speciai meeting of cou-ncil be called. Counc. Gray said it was an urgent matter and that there was nieed for additional park- ing at the arena. if this worrk is not soon startedit will not be completed this wînter. TWO FIRE CALLS The local f Ire department was called Monday evening to the Lee home on Miii Street North where a piug-in heater was smoking. Tuesday morming the department was calied to the home of MIr. and Mrs. Ross Patton in the Kendal area where a fuse box had caught f ire. No -damage at either cail. Ail In the election being heid on Monday, November l3th vot- ers in Ward 3 are to choose two candidates to, sit on the Northumberland and New- castle Board of Education for the next two years. Four candidates are running for the two positions on the Board. The four candidates ail spoke at an ail-candidates meeting at the Newcastle Hall last Thursday evening. The candidates are, George Cameron, Wm. (Bill) Car- Candidates man, Marg. Ibbotson and William Montgomnery. Carman and Ibbotson are the two incum.bent members of the Board. GEORGE CAMERON Mr. Cameron stated that local taxpayers were paying a big tax dollar in education but not obtaining the return that should be expected. H1e also said that forty percent of those wbo start in hîgh school neyer reach grade 13 even though a high percent score high in scholastic achieve- ment. - Cameron said there must be a change when one consideres there is a million out of work in Canada and yet industry must import skilied labour. "I believe there are weaknesses in the system," he said and we rmiist speak to the people, the graduated students, the drop-outs, tea- chers and parents to find out what is wrong. The candidate said he had meet been a member of the Board during 75 and 76 and as a trustee became too involved in such as busing and buildings with the resuit he did not have time to see what was going on in the ciass- room. This will change if I'm eiected this time around he said and I will do an honest and sincere job for you.
