6-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, December 20th, 1978 cl SPO RTS being set up by Steve Stec. The 5th goal was tucked away by Steve Stec with help from Vance Prue and Jeff Gray. Kirk Carr. finishéd the Orono scoring on a nice pass from Vance Prue. Bob Zych was just sensational in the nets for Orono. Stephen Sawyer played an excellent game on defence as did Ed King, Steve Graham and Paul King. The Orono Tennant Fuel Atoms hosted Uxbridge on Monday, Dec. lth at the Orono arena. Uxbridge defeated Orono by a score of 1-0 in a tight checking game which almost saw Orono get the tying goal with a few seconds left in the game. Vaughn Chambers and Bill Buchanan played strong games for the Orono team. On Saturday, Dec. 16th the Orono On Friday, December 15th the Orono Atom team played host in an exhibition game against the atom team from Millbrook and come out on top 2-1. The Millbrook team with only five players borrowed one of the forward lines from the Orono team. Shawn Bailey picked up a goal for the Millbrook team when he put in a pass from Jim Sharpe. Mike Lane and Darren Lewis set up a nice play in the Millbrook end to set up Kevin Hartwig for Dec. 9th - Orono 5, Beaverton 0 Bobby Zych posted his first shutout after only 6 games between the pipes. Zych is carrying a very respectable 2.63 goal against average after his first 8 games. The Orono Bantams played a letter perfect game to take the win. The scoring leadership was shared by Steve Stec and Kirk Carr both with 2 goals and 1 assist. Ken Farrow completed the scoring with a single goal. Vance Prue, Ed King, and Paul King each had an assist. Dec. loth - Orono 2, Manvers 3 Orono and Manvers played an excellent game pitting former Orono boys now with Manvers against their old tean mates. Only excellent goal tending by Jeff Mitchell the Manvers goalie prevented the Orono boys from another win or at least a Orono Bantams were finalists at Oakwood Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 16th. In the first game Orono defeated Oshawa Canadians 3-1. This was an exciting close gane from start to finish. Oshawa scored the lst goal with Orono playing shorthanded. This really put our boys behind the eight bal as tournament rules gave the game to the team scoring the 1st goal. The Orono boys finally got rolling when Steve Stec scored a shorthanded goal assisted by Vance Prue. Ken Farrow scored the 2nd goal on a nice pass from Kirk Carr. Kirk Carr finished the scoring with an empty net goal with one second left. Vance Prue set up the last goal with a beautiful rinkwide pass. Bob Zych played an excellent game in net with the defence doing a good job of clearing stray pucks and moving out of their own end. The 2nd game saw Orono handle Bobcaygeon 3-1 to advance to Champion- ship game. Kirk Carr started the Orono boys scoring on a nice play fron Paul King. Bobcaygeon tied the game at 1 apiece but Steve Stec put the locals ahead to stay when he was set up by Steve Graham. Kirk Carr got the insurance goal assisted by Vance Prue. Once again Bob Zych was sharp between the pipes. The team really put forth an all-out effort. Orono won the battle but lost the war when Scotty Prescott was injured in the Ist period. X-Rays proved a separated shoulder so Scott's fine play will be missed for the next 4 weeks. Get well quick Scotty, because the team really needs you. In the championship game Orono lost a close on 3-2 to Oakwood. The Orono Boys dominated much of the game but Tennant Fuel Atoms travelled to Picker- ing Village where they were defeated by a score of 3-0. The Pickering team outhustled the Orono boys from start to finish. The Orono boys played a good game but they didn't hustle as much as they could and the team didn't get enough shots on the Pickering goal. the first Orono goal. Less than 2 minutes later Kevin Hartwig got his second goal on a pass from Collin Reed and Darren Lewis. Good game boys. On Saturday, Dec. 16th the Orono team travelled to Bewdley to play the Bewdley B team and were defeated 9-0. Bewdley scored 3 goals in the first period, adding 1 more in the second period, and then exploding for 5 more goals in the final period. tie. Bob Zych also played a strong game in the Orono nets. Steve Stec potted the first Orono goal on a 3 way passing play froma Vance Prue and Jeff Gray. Ken Farrow got the second goal on a nice passing play from Steve Stec and Kirk Carr. Dec. ith - Orono 2, Sunderland 5 Orono once again put in a strong effort for the third night in a row. The team really misses the fine play of Scott Prescott who has missed the last 3 games due to a cracked rib. We hope to have Scotty back in the lineup Saturday for the tournament in Oakwood. Steve Wood had a big night in Sunderland picking up both goals. We hope for more of the same in the upcoming games from Steve. Assists in the gaine went to Ken Farrow (2), Paul King (1) and Kirk Carr (1). Oakwood's good goaltending and bad luck did the locals in. The boys kept trying to the very end but after 3 games with only 10 players we just ran out of gas. Goal scorers for Orono were Steve Stec and Ken Farrow. Assists went to Jeff Gray, bad King and Steve Stec. Dec. 17th - Orono 5, Peterborough 4 Orono Bantams bounced back from the tournament to play one of their best games of the season defeating Peter- borough. It was a two way game with lots of physical contact. Vance Prue broke out or a scoring slump to load the team with a goal and 3 assists, Steve Stec had a pair of goals and 1 assist. Ken Farrow had a goal and 1 assist, Paul King had 1 goal and 1 assist, Jeff Gray picked up 2 assists and Ed King had 1 assist. Bob Zych was just sensational in backing up the team between the pipes. Dec. 18th - Orono 6, Bowmanville 1 In an exhibition gaine played in Orono Monday night the Orono boys once again displayed their courage in picking up another victory. Just before game time we learned that Ken Farrow may be sidelined for the balance of the season. Ken has been playing super hockey for the team and his loss to the team is immeasurable. Ken is an excellent 2-way player, an assistant captain and real team leader. Get well quick Ken, we need you. The boys put their heads down and went out and won the game for Ken. Steve Wood started things off with his first 2 goals assisted by Steve Stec. Steve Wood scored the 2nd goal assisted by Kirk Carr and Paul King. Vance Prue scored the 3rd goal deflecting a Paul King blast from the point. Jeff Gray scored the 4th goal after The Canadians were in town for an exhibition game on Saturday evening, an Oshawa L.N.H.L. affiliated team. They opened the scoring in the first period with Paul Reddick combining with Paul Reed to get Orono into the game. Oshawa added three more goals before the Orono lads came back to life. Ross Stutt poked in Paul Reed's pass for one counter and Terry Hedges combined with Ken Prescott to bring the score up to 4-3 and end the second period. Oshawa added one more in the third to end the game (Oshawa 5 to Orono 3. On Monday night the Midgets journeyed to Port Perry for a league game. Dan Barlow led the boys to a super team effort between the pipes as all played as a team and very well. Port Saturday, Dec. 16th Orono played hos to Sunderland Pee Wees coming out on top 7-1 in Orono. Greg Vey put Orono on the scoreboard unassisted late in the first period. Stephen Murree scored the second Orono goal on a pass from Glyn Jenkins with 53 seconds left. The second period was scoreless with the Orono boys really coming on strong in the third. Greg Vey scored early in the third from Derek Mumford followed by Randy Tennant from Greg Vey and Rodger King, Paul Rosseau unassisted. Greg Vey froin Glyn Jenkins and Greg again, unassisted. Geoff Green also played a strong game in the Orono net. Orono travelled to Beaverton on Sunday evening on very slippery roads, Perry got the first goal of the game but Jeff Westbrook pounded in a Pete Kruhkert pass to tie the game up seconds later. Then Ross Stutt flipped it over the goalie from Ken Prescott to put Orono ahead. By the time the second period was over Port had tied it up. Orono really turned on the pressure in the third but due to excellent goaltending Port held them off while scoring two goals for thenselves to end the agme Port 4 to Orono's 2. The teams management, Bill Reddick, Bob Hedges, Russ Major and Gary Bridger, wish the enure team.. nd their families, as well as our faitntul supporters, the very merriest of-Christmas's. After Christmas the Midgets take part in two tournaments, one on the 26th in Ops-Lindsay and on the 28th in Port Perry. but the trip was woith the effort as Orono played a strong gaine winning 2-1. Orono opened the scoring in the first with Randy Tennant scoring from Stephen Sawyer assisting. In the second period Glyn Jenkins scored unassisted with a fine end to end rush beating Beavertons goalie with a great wrist shot. The boys feil asleep in the third period but hung on with some good defensive play. Geoff Green played another strong game in the nets turning away many good shots by Beaverton in the third. This is four games in a row, great going guys, keep up thc hard work, This is our last league game until after Christmas, so have a good holiday and a Merry Christmas. Jim Dennis and Mike.
