2.4mno weekly Times, Wednesday, December 27th, 1978 Orono Weekly Times ANEW YEAR DAWNS Over the next three and a half days we will witness the final countdown for the year 1978, and at the end of the countdown will herald the birth of a new year. Surely we have become sophisticated enough to now realize that the changing of the calendar changes very little. One could turn the pages of history back and find readings that would certainly place one in the present because mankind has always faced problems and new fields of endeavour down through the centuries. The bright new future that one would hope comes in the new year is in the hands of individuals working in a co-operative manner to bring about a better life for all people of the world. We must have confidence in ourselves, in our leaders and in the country as a whole for as the calendar changes it will be people that bring about change, if it is required. To all we wish the compliments of the season, as well as an air of confidence, good health and happiness. AGAIN TO THE FORE Recent comments by the Planning Director concerning development in the Courtice area has brought the issue of development in this particular area of the Town of Newcastle again to the forefront. Unfortunately the mistake was made a number of years ago as to the Courtice area when the province succumbed to local political pressure to keep Courtice within the Town of Newcastle rather than joining the area to the City of Oshawa. The province had made a sound judgement prior to regionalization that the Courtice area should goto Oshawa. It certainly could see that Courtice was linked with Oshawa as to services and all facilities necessary for its residents. Political pressure prevailed and the Courtice area remained with the Town of Newcastle. This move will no doubt be a costly one for taxpayers in the Town of Newcastle as the Town endeavours to duplicate those services that are required for a residential area of some 20,000 to 30,000 people. Most local politicians have over the past few years privately expressed the view that the Courtice area should have gone to Oshawa but never have we heard this expressed at a council meeting or promoted in any other form. The Planning Director, is quoted as stating that "Courtice area resident's do use the services and facilities of the City of Oshawa". No matter what happens this will never change. It would not be conceivable to imagine that the Courtice area would ever be associated with Bowmanville rather than with Oshawa. The mistake was made prior to the formation of the Region of Durham in 1974 and it was not an economic de.cision at that time nor can it ever be'supported as an economic decision. TOO MANY SANTAS BUT FUN FOR ALL (Continued from page 1) students furthered the enter- tainment value of the even- ing. Christmas carol singing and the apperance of Santa completed the program. During the course of the evening the Lockhart's Par- ents-Teachers Association honoured Mrs. Lawrence Greenwood, former principal at the school, with a presenta- tion of a large framed coloured photograph of her- self. This photograph is to be hung in the school. The presentation to Mrs. Green- wood was made by Mrs. Barbara Munneke and Mrs. Mary Gibson on behalf of the Association. The Christmas concert was a traditional concert for this time of the season and it was apparant that interest in such events has not waned over the years. Hoping you and your loved ones will be snowed under with peace and prosperity! Lots of good luck and thanks. Orono Fuel & Lumber Ltd. Using up turkey leftovers Now that the Christmas dinner is over, many of you have probably packaged up the remaining turkey and put it in the freezer. Food specialists at the Ontario Ministry of Agricul- ture and Food recommend that for minimal loss of flavor, texture and nutritional value, plan to use the turkey meat within two months. If the turkey has been covered with gravy, sauce or some other liquid, it can be stored for up to three months. Frozen stuffing should be used within one month. Plan to use frozen turkey stock made from the turkey cai- cass within six months. To prepare the frozen turkey for serving, unwrap it and bake at 200 C (400 F) - large pieces for one hour, slices in liquid for 45 minutes. Or thaw large pieces about two hours at room tempera- ture or seven hours in the refrigerator. There are numerous ways in which the turkey can be incorporated into your meals - hot turkey sandwiches, turkey pie, turkey crepes, turkey and vegetable cas- serole or turkey salad. For a salad, start with cubes or chunks of cooked turkey, salad dressing to moisten and OMB to settle hassle over new Oshawa fair home An Ontario Municipal Board hearing is to be held on January 25th to hear object- ions to the locating of Durham Region Place south-east of the Village of Brooklin. Dur- ham Region Place has been devised by the South Ontario Agricultural Society as a centre for the annual fair as well as a recreational and sports area for the region of Durham. The complex to be situated on 67 acres of land would include livestock barns, arena and sportsground, model farmyard, farmer's market, horse back riding area, amusement park, child- ren's playgrounds, picnic area and a man-made lake. It is the intentioi of the Society that the complex would be in use the year round. The South Lake Ontario Agricultural Society has been without grounds and build- ings for its annual fair since 1974 when they were evicted from Alexander Park in Oshawa. Residents in the immediate -area of the proposed complex have filed objections to the proposal with the Ontario Municipal Board. They state that the proposai is not compatible with surrounding residential property and that the proposal is not in accord with the well being of the community of the region. The use of the land con- forms with the Whitby officiaI plan as well as with the R-egion of Durham regional pla n seasonings to taste.
