There was no discussion allowed on the lifting recom- mendation at Mondays meeting but it is considered that the recommendation from staff to retender will br- îng out a full discussion at couincil. The item was tabled in Oc- tober to seek ulý-to-date in- formation from the Ministry of Housing as to possible ad- ditional boans for the project. At 'that time counicil was split over the recomînenda- tion from staff that the Town retender a modified plan of works iu Courtice to include only storm sewering. Couacs. Cowman, Hamre and Hub- bard hadl opposed retender- ing stating such costs for the works could be a burden on existing taxpayers and as well there was no agreement at that timne with any developer iu the Courtice scheme. Counci Had called tenders for storm sewering, dam and ponds in the Courtice area and have considered the cost of such works, close to $500,000 was too costly. As a resuit staff has recommended a modified plan to use in- terest free moules from the province and possible funds from Hydro. The Town has already spent $161,000 iu land pur- chases and other costs related to the preparation for such works lu the Courtice area. Durham expands CAD-CAM training Durham College now has several CAD/CAM training progranis underway whereby third-year apprentices, as welI as skilled tradesmien and -supervisors in the Tool and Die area at General Motors, are receiving instruction in Computer Assisted Design and Computer Assisted Manufacturing. CAD/CAM enables products to be designed and mnanufactured to meet increasingly rigid standards, and reduces pro- duction time dramatically. There are 24 third-year GM Tool and Die apprentices cur- rently taking training on a day release basis, as well as the program for supervisors and skilled tradesmen. Other companies of the Metro-Toronto area and Durham Region interested in Two weeks of .1raining for ýý0Around We had intended to have this article ready for last week's issue when we were ail quite mindful of the cold weather of the past two weekends. It does appear front many reports that we, i Canada, may be in for a sweeping cold front for a number of years. They refer to it as the Little Ice Age 11 and suggest it could have greater effect than the Little Ice Age of 1770 to 1820. Certainly the local plumbers over the two week period were more than busy with thawing pipes and boosting heating systems with temperatures away down and continuing for a period of days within their cycle. But even with ail the cold frosty front we were able to take ad- vartage of winter for skiing every day fromn Thursday evening to Sunday, January 2th. when the temperature dipped somewhere under minus twenty. 0f course aIl we had exposed to the elements were two eyeballs with everything else covered with thermal wear. One thing we have enjoyed this winter is a number of sightings of Pine Grosbeaks in the forest both male and female. These birds are noted for their colouring and being- the most friendly of the Finch family. On the recent Sunday we were within two feet of a female feeding on buds on wild raspberry canes poking through the snow and grass seeds also pertruding through the blanket of snow. It is a rare occasion for us Io get so close to observe birds but it does give a good opportunity for identification and to note some of their habits. Getting back to the frigid weather conditions of that two week period we did note that Donna, in the front office of the Times, was holding back wýhen the rest of us Ieft for dinner or at five. Finally, we learned that both front doors in hier auto had frozen and she unable to open themi. Donna had to resortto entering the back seat and climrbing over into the cockpit in the front before taking off. Having, on one oc- casion, being entangled with flie shoulder strap of the seat belt was not about to let us in on the antics of becoming mobile. A moderation ini the weather allowîng the opening of' the two front doors to the aurto has damnpened any urge by Donna in 'lecoming a mnonkev or rnountain goat. YJonna says, -It beats walk ing." ,dnesday, Juuîuary 27, 1982. 3. CAD/CAM are also actively participating. These training prograrns are al classed as High Technology, and conse- quently may be partially funded through a Training in Business and Industry grant fromn the Provincial Govern- ment. In addition to the above, there are a num ber of -comn- panies which have purchased Co'mputervision CAD/CAM systemns and are takin-g ad- vantage of the Canadian training facilities available at Durham Colleg e. Because oJ the heavy utilization of its CAD/CAM Training Centre, the College is seeking to expand the facility with the addfion riof two more work staions, so that, larger groups can be handled. Durham will be re- questing the necessary fun- ding through the Province' s recently announced BILD Program in support of Hi:gh Technology. For further information on CAD/CAM training, contact the Technology Division at Durham Collegeat 576-0210, Ext. 265, or the College's In- dustrial Liaison Departmnent at Ext. 234.
