Snow and Ice Fifty-seven cm. of snow and 45 cm. of ice can be found, in the Baisam Lake Provincial Park area. Ice on some of the area lakes is beginning to show pressure cracks and ridges, particular- ly near the shorelines. Nor- thumberland County Forest reports 72.1 cm. of snow with a light crust, good conditions for cross-country ski or snowshoe travel. Lake Ontario erosion wears on E. Mitchell, District Planner Shoreline erosion is threatening several homnes in the Bowmanville area. The houses sit near the edge of a thirty foot bluff on Lake On- tario. The homeowners have tricd protectîng their proper- tics by dumping 11, -cernent, and many other materials over the slopes, but have not managed to stop the erosion. This type of erosion problem confronts shoreline owners on many other parts of the Great Lakes. Shoreline erosion of a ma- jor water body is difficuit to control. For anyone planning a new building, the best solu- tion is place the building far enough inland that erosion will not reach it during the life of the structure. This is the policy recommended by the Ministry of Naturafi Resources. The Ministry's criteria is that new buildings should be safe from erosion for one hundrcd years from the date of construction. The extent of future erosion can be projected from recorded erosion rates of the past.* On the Canadian side of Lake Ontario, this has been donc jointly 'by Environment Canada, and the Ontario Ministry o f Natural Resources. The results were published as part of the Great Lakes Flood and Erosion Prone Areas Mapping. Owners of existing houses or buildings have a more dif- ficult problemn. The natural forces of wind and water ex- ercise great power over shoreline structures. Water levels can only be controlled within limits aflowed by nature. The type of soil and groundwater conditions of the shore greatly affects the rate of erosion. Dumping material over, an eroding siope is rarely effective. Con- crete abutments, stone retain- ing walls, and gabion baskets are expensîve and can be useless if improperly instaîl- cd. Even properly installed protection works may still fail if erosion can take place at the ends of the,,structuire and expose the unprotected area behind it. In some areas, groins (structures which dissipate wave energy) have been used successfuliy to trap sediment and create a protec- tive beachi. But groins are ex- pensive to construct and have been knowîn o J'ail. There is no foolproof method of con- trolling shorehine erosion. Any iandowner conccrned with this problem .shiouid con- tact the local district office of the Ministry of Naturai Resources and/or obtain the advice of an independent consulting engineer. Dairy farmers elect officers Over sixty dairy farm-ers attended the Feb. 1 meetinà of the Durham Milk Producers Associa- tion in which the 1982 Chairmen, Executive- 0f- ficers, and Directors were elected. Jack Lancaster of Port Hope was elected as the, 1982 Chairmnan for DMPA, and serving alongside of him as Vice- Chairman is Dianne Moore of Cavan. Gordon Barrie of Bowmanville is the new secret ary-treasurer and the elected dîrectors are: Davi *d Larmer, Francis Jose, Karen Hanbridge, Scotty MacGregor, Lloyd Kellog, Neil Allin and Don Welsh.
