Kevin Roberts put the obys up by three picking On Saturday, Feb. 27, 1982 the Tennant Fuels Atoms competed succcssfully in the Manvers Atom Tournament, coming home with the "A" Championshîp, much to the delight of their coaches, parents and fans. The road to the Championship was by no means a cake walk as we fac- cd some keen competîtion, the first of which come from the Oshawa Canadians. lu this game we got off to a big of a slow start by Todd Hut- ton eventually broke the scoreless dead lock and got us going with help from Brian Rodd and Brian Goodwin. Brian Goodwin then came back and put us two up assisted by Anthony Webb and Todd Gray. Ted Gaudet then put the game away with two goals the first from Brian Rodd and Todd Gray and the second from Blaine Soucb and Jamie Shmyr. The final was Orono 4 Oshawa 0. In the second game wc fac- cd the host team, Manvers, who were rcaily pumped Up and gave us some stiff op- position. There were no goals to count in the first period but it featured some exciting action with lots of fast skating, fi erce cbecking and end to end rushes. In the se- cond period Ted Gaudet beat the Manvers goalie on a pass from Tim Bailey to give Orono a 1-0 lead. Later in the period Brian Rodd who's been playing soine super hockey of late provided an in- surance goal to give Orono a 2-0 lead. Brian got belp from Todd Hutton and Brian Goodwin. That was enough to eliminate Manvers and put us in the "A" Championship final against Oakwood as' there was no scoring in the third perîod. Even thougb wc liminated Manvers it didn't mean we weren't gratefull for the invitation to their tourna- ment. We were very thankful Orono play(;d a strong gamne stopping Port Hope rushes and clearing the puck well. Wben the puck got past thcmn Steven Standieman, in goal, blockcd it everytime but one. Forcwards, Greg Hooper, Trevor Lomax and Scott Hall buzzed around the Port Hope goal until the 5:30 mark of the first period when Greg Hooper faked out the goalie and dumped the puck into the net on the opposite side. Scott Willianis, Chris Yeo, for the invitation and the Manvers people, responsible for organizing the tourna- ment are to be congratulated for a job well donc. As mentioned above the third game pitted uis against Oakwood in wbat turned out to be the most thrilling game of the whole tournament. In this one Oakwood jumped out to a 1-0 lcad at the 3:57 mark of the first pcriod but a little over a minute later Brian Goodwin tied the score from Todd Hutton and Brian Rodd. Iu the second period Blaine Souch gave Orono the lead with bclp from Todd Therteil and Ted Gaudet. Oakwood wasn't about to roll over and play dead just yet as tbey bounced back with a goal late in the second period to again tic the score. This set the stage for an ex- citing third period which saw Oakwood out shoot us 8-2 but unable to beat Mike Goodmurphy. As the final seconds tickcd away it looked vcry much as though we were bcaded into overtimie; but flot just yet with 20 seconds left. Anthony Webb and Todd Thertell combined to send Ted Gaudet into the dlent with a breakaway. He Shoots! He scores! Orono, wins the game and the chaî- pionship. Ted Gaudet won the MVP award for bis heroies and was wvell deserv-.~ ing of its scoring four of our nine goals. In addition l'd like to mention for these cond week in a row the brilliant goaltending provid- cd by Mikec Goodmiurphyv. Mike had two shutouts in ths tournament and hclped us in the Oakwood gamne in tbe third period. I'd also like to congratulate tire whole teamn for a super effort and a great touruamrent and wish themn wcll in their upcomning playoff against Omemce. and John Buittigieg were on the attack tbrougnout the game coming close to scoring many times. Ryan M!Ivarsanisý and David Paý,ytou Stewart failed the Port Hope at- tackers constny. It was't until the third pcriod that Port Hope got on the scoreboard to tic the game. Orono kept pressing for the remainder of the game but couldn't break the 1-1 tic. Excellent game boys you'Il get them next tiîne for sure. SPOR TS On Friday, Feb. l9th.
