By selecting and mnatching specimens with similar good characteristics it shouid be possible to corne up with seed. and eventually seedlings, with super good qualities. Ultimateiy, ail white pine nursery stock couid be disease resistant, straight, fast growing progeny of "PLUS" tree parents. White spruce and several of the hardwood species are aiso be- ing geneticaliy improved under this program. Landowners can help the tree improvement program in two ways, first by granting permission to MNR staff members te coileet tree scions if requested, anld by obtain- ing advice whenever your woodiot needs thinning or cutting. If Fortest section staff mnembersý inspect and mark your woodiot before cutting, potentiai "plus" trees can be identified and ar- rangements made to coilect the scions before the tree is cut, or maybe spare the tree from the woodsman's saw so it can continue te be a con- tributing "plus" tree.
