They put ap a very disrnal showing as the Bowrnanville club trounced thern 9 to 0. On Friçlay night Pickering Village was the opposition for a well played garne held in Orono. Both teains skated well with the first period' scoreless. The only secýond period goal was off J.B. Brachvogel's stick, whipping into the corqier passed up by David Sheridan and Carner- on Esler. The thirýi period was again scoreless as Shawn Hardy, bètween the pipes for Orono, held them' scoreless. The game enled Orono I10 Pickering '0. Peewees travelled to Fenelon Falls for the second garne of, the Tri-County Finals. The boys played a strong garne for two periods as they kept the big %hoolers frorn Fenelon Falls in check and put a lot of -)ressure on their goaltender. At the end of the second period Orono had built up a 5-2 lead. In the third period however, Orono stopped skating and checking which has been their biggest problern to date, and Fenelon Falls storrned back to win 8-6. Scoring for Orono Robert Snoek 3, Brian Hill 2, and Brian Souch 1. Assists went to Robert Snoek 2, Brian Hili 2 and Brian Souch 2. Special Mention to Mike Lane and Darren -Dennis on defense. This gives Orono a 2 garne 10 1 lead in the, 3 out of 5 series ,charn- pionshipseries. The I.O.O.F. Peewees have a big chance to win it ail at horne on Mon- day, March 3th. at '7:Wt PM Scoring for Orono was Robert Snoek 3, Brian Souch 1, Tirn Mercer 1. Assists went to Brian Souch 2, Darren Dennis 2, Brian Hill 1, and Rob Jeromne 1. Congratula- tions on a super effort boys, On Monday, March 22nd. the Matthews and Hilîs Ins. O.M.H.A. Peewees fplayed host to the Oshawa L.N.H.L. Cliff Milîs Bruins in an ex- hibition gane and came away on the short end of a 5-4 score. The first period saw both tearns play end 10 end hockey with excellent chances at both ends but neither team able 10 put the puck in thie net. Finally, with 1:00 minute left in 'the period Brad Roberts put one in for Orono with assists going fo Darren, Lewis and Scott McCullough. The Oshawa Bruins camne iright back t0 score two in the last 0:30 seconds as the local boys stood around and wa- ched. Scoring for Oshawa were Denis Leger and Rodney Morris. The second period saw the Bruins go ahead 3-1 on a goal by Jeff Furey only 10 see Orono corne right back with one of their own as Russell Sullivan rifled one past the Bruins goalie with assists go- ing 10 Darren Lewis and Brent Hutton. Wth 1:15 lefI in the third period Jeff Furey carne uip with his second of the garne 10 put the Bruins ahead 4-2. In the third period the local boys fought back corning up with 10w super unassisted ef- forts by Shawn Bailey to lie the game at 4-4. With 1:27 left in the period James Srirle put one in on a riscue ini front of the Orono goal 10 give the Bruins a 5-4 win in a very entertaining garne by both teamns. Special Mention to Shawn Bailey for an ex- cellent effort. Orono 6 Newcastle Lions 1 On Tuesday, March 23rd. the Matthews and Hill Ins. O.M.H.A. Peewees travelled 10 Newcastle for an exhibi- tion garne and carne away 6-1 whinners. The first two periods saw sorne excellent hockey wilh both teams corning up with excellent plays only 10 be lurned back by sorne brilliant goallending at bolh ends. Finally with 3:37'left in the second period Scott Mc- Cullough wilh sorne greal se- cond effort 10 gel by the Newcastle Defence rifled one past the Newcastle goalie 10 put Orono ahead 1-0, with assists going 10 Stuart Irwin and Brent Hulon. The third period saw the local boys pour on the pressure and cornpletely dorinate the period frorn start to finish as they carne up with five goals before Fred Milison spoiled Jeff Martins shutout with only 5:27 left in the game. Scoring for Orono were: Brad Roberts 2, Darren Lewis, Brent Hutton and Shawn Bailey wilh assists go- ing to Brent Hutton 2, Kevin Murnford 2, Shawn Bailey and Darren Lewis. Orono 2 Newcastle 1 On Friday, March 26th. the Matthews and HillI ms. O.M.H.A. Peewees par- ticipated in the Pine Ridge Tournarnent in Bowrnanville. The first garne saw thein corne up against their arch rivels frorn Newcastle. The -first two periods were scoreless as both tearns had ,nurnerous chances to score in a wide open-affair only to be turned back by super goalten- * ing at. both ends or fail to cash in on their oppor- -.tunilies. The third period saw Newcastle go ahead 1-0 at the *10:05 miark on a goal by Fred Milson. This, goal only seern- id to'spur the local boys on as .they seernjd to-dig down for a litt1é 'extra and finally with 2:29 left in the gaine Darren *Lewis lied the game at 1-1 on a beautiful set up- frorn Scott McCullough. After tieing the gaine the local boys kept on the pressure trying to avoid a shut'out in overtirne and with 1:07 left in the garne Scott McCullough rifled one past the Newcastle goalie after a perfect set up by. Darren Lewis to gi ve the local boys the win and move on to the second round for the charn- pionship. Excellent, corn- eb ack-guys. Spetial Mention to 'Scott McCullough and Darren Lewis Super Effort. Orono 4 Sarnia 2 The Second garne saw the locat boys corne up against the Pre-Tournarnent favourite from Sarnia. But the Orono boys had other ideas about who was to rnove onto the Charnpionship garne as everyone dug down and camne up with a little extra and carne up with their rnost impressive tearn effort of the season and a thrilling 4-2 vic- tory. The first period saw Orono open the scoring at the 7:15 rnark on an unassisted goal by Stuart Irwin. With 2:56 left in the period Russell Sullivan deflected one past the Sarnia goalie to rnake it 2-0 with assisîs going to Kevin Hartwig and Derek Anderson. With 0:47 seconds left in the per;od Sarnia cut the margin to 2-1 on a goal by Mike Simmons. The 'second period saw Orono keep the pressure on and at the 5:18 mark Scott McCullough went end to end on a super effort and rifled one past the startled Sarnia goalie to up the count to 3-1. With 3:12 left in the period Darren Lewis rnade il 4-1 with assists going to Scott McCullough and Kevin Murnford. The- final period saw Sarnia turn -on the pressure but could corne up with but one goal late in the period as Jeff Martin stopped thern cold time and again wiîh sorne outstanding goal tendîng between the pipes. Final score Orono 4 and Sarnia 2. Super Effort Guys! Orono 5 Cobourg 1 On Saturday, March 27th. the Matthews and HillI ms. O.M.H.A. Peewees travelled against Cobourg. After the win over Sarnia the previous day the boys knew that they could win the charnpionship with some extra effort and with Kevin Hartwig Ieading the way with probably his best effort of the year defeated Cobourg by a score of 5-1 for the "A" Charn- pionship. The first period saw Orono go ahead 2-0 with Kevin Hartwig scoring both goals with, assists going to Derek Anderson, Russell Sullivan, and Shawn Bailey. The second period saw both tearns corne up with sorne great sco ring chances only to be stopped cold by some ex- cellent goaltending at both ends. The final* period saw Orono go ahead 3-0 on a goal by-Darren Lewis with assists going to Brad Roberts and Shawn Bailey. Cobourg carne back with one of their own by Dale Colbart but this was to be the only one they would get by Jeff Martin who again was hot in the- Orono nets. Brad Roberts made it 4-1 with 1:12 left in the period assisted by Kevin MurnfÔrd and Darren Lewis. Then with 0:47 seconds lêft in the period and the Coliourg goalie out for the extra mani Darren Lewis put in the final goal in the open net with assists go- ing to Brad Roberts and Derek Anderson. The whole tearn is 10 be congratulated on a super effort and corning away with the "A" Chamn- pionship. Way to Go Guys! The Matthews and Hilîs O.M.H. A. Peewees would like to congratulate Bruce Lush, Bob Freernan and the Eight teams competý.- in Orono tournament On Friday, March 26th. Orono hosted a peewee tour- nament that was sponsored by I.O.O.F. Lodge 436 of Orono. The tournarnent at- tracted teams frorn Peter- borough, Ennismonre, Bewdley, Bowrnanville, Napanee, Grafton, Oshawa and the horne tearn l.O.O.F. Peewees. The first garneof the day Orono faced their old rivaIs Bewdley in a squeaker with Orono winning by a 2-1 score with goals by Robert Snoek and Darren Dennis. The second garne featured Bowrnanville and Oshawa with Oshawa MSER Coffey bearn winning 4-3 in overtirne, The third garne Ennisrnore faced the strong Paxton stinger tearn frorn Peter- borough with Peterborough winning 7-2. The fourth garne had Napanee Co-op facing Grafton in another nail biter with Grafton corning out on top by a 5-4 score. The fifth garne of the day had Bowrnanville Vs. Bewdley to -see who advanced to the "B" final, Bowrnan- ville won this garne by 2-1 score elirinating Bewdley for the day. The sixlh garie featured Orono, Vs. Oshawa Bowrnanville Minor Hockey Association on the excellent run "Pine Ridge Tourna- mnent." and Orono again came out on top by a 2-0 score with goals by Br ian Souch and Chrîs Richards and the shutout registered by Jeff Graharn. Orono advanced to the "A" final. Gamne 7- had Ennismore a nd Napanee to decide who advanced to the "IB'ý consie Final against- Bowrnanville. Ennismore this one 6-5 in a game that could have gone either way. Garne 8 Peter- borough faced Grafton with the Paxton Stingers winning easily by a 5-1 score bo ad- vance to the "A" final against Orono. Garne nurnber 9 for "B" Consolation final' was corn- pletely dorninated by En- nismore as they outhustled Bowrnanville toîwin easily hy a 7-1 score. Congratulations g oes bo Greg Foley of En- nisrnore who was awarded, the garne's M.V.P. Garne 10 the "A" final featured the Oronio I.O.O.F. Peewees Vs. the Peter- borough Paxton Stingers. The Orono boys came up with one of their best efforts to date in this garne but were conitinually frustrated by Peter Borough goalie Bill Yates and the goal posîs. Th-, Orono boys carne up short losing 2-0. Grant McCoy and Tirn Wilshaw scored for Peterborough and Grant Mc- Coy was awarded the garres M...P.
