Everyone is relieved that all of the excite-, ment during that period of time has surpassed for the time being and that things are flnaiiy back to normal. * During the week prior to this, tryouts for the Senior Girls Soccer Team was taking place. An approximation of *thirty-nine girls signed up and a total of eighteen were chosen. The newly picked soccer teain played their first game of the season on Thurs- day, April lSth, and lost to the opposing teain, Vanier, 1 -0. Two gaines were schedul- ed for yesterday being played at Clarke, but the resuits of those gaînes have flot been given as of yet. Good Luck Teain! * Play practices have been in "full bloom" this spring for "The Clumsy Custard Hor- ror Show" which will be featured in the Clarke auditorium during the even- ings of May 6th. 7th. and 8th. Band and Choir students going on the Exchange to Barriere, British Columbia are getting a littie impatient and are very much looking forward to their departure-on May l4th. Option sheets were filed out for next years' timetables and ail must have been signed and handed into the school on Monday, April 19, 1982. Buliling down in Town of Newcastle The issuance of building permits both for construction and demolition in the Town of Newcastle is down the flrst three months of 1982 com- pared to that in 1981. A total of 31 permits were issued during the first three months in 1982 compared to 52 in 1981. The Town has issued one permit for single family dwelling in the urban areas and three i agricultural zones for a total of four per- mits for new dweLlings. This compared with 12 in the saine period last year. Construction in the Town is as was expected earlier this year when the budget was comipleted. Mayor Rickard at Mon- day's committee meeting pointed out the drop in building starts and question- ed the work load for the two building inspectors. He asked if it would not be possible to have the department and staff look after the conditions of an Occupancy and Main- tainance by-Iaw. There were 4 or 5 people fromn our district and of particular in- terest to our area, Mr. Merlin Slute of Bowmanville society won several prizes, in the floral design sections. The various- secretaries gave an mnteresting resumne of their society activities, and of many civic plantings and trees planted. Several new Jr. societies are coming along and this is evidence of future hor- ticulturists. Mr. Black was introduced by Gordon Wick and brought a very imformative talk on how the "Cullen Gardens", got started. Mr. Cullen purchased pro- perty around Whitby about 20 years ago and every year has added to the already col- ourful and interesting display, already famous to this area. Mr. Cullen is a devoted Christian Inyman for his Church and so devoutly interested in beatuifying Gods world. A brand new restaurant and Convention Centre is planned for next year, to accommodate up to 5(X0 peopie. -The restival of Colours" featuring tulips, spring plantings will be on from April 15th - May 15 followed by the "Festival of Roses," in June. Displays and Competitions were viewed by ail presenit. African violets, houseplants, and arrangements. In the year book Competitions, Orono placed first, so we in Orono can be very proud of our 1982 book. The new siate of officers was brought in by Dick Gibbs Chairman of Nominating Committee: District Director - AI Foss, West Hill Asst. District Director - Dorothy Crocknell, Cann- ington Orono Horticulture. Asst. District Director - Merlin Slute,. Bowmanvilie. Sec. Treas. Mrs. Margaret Beath, Brooklin. Presentations were made to the two retiring members: Mrs. Anne Evans and Mis. 1. Challice, both from the Orono Society. A District Service award was made to Mrs. Hîilda Le Masurier, R. R. No. 1, Cann- ington, for her long years of service to horticulture. Due to illness, she was unable to be present to accept her award. Mrs. Lynn Harrison placed 3rd in floral design and Mrs. Lorna Atkins an honourable mention for African violets. Mrs. Harrison placed lst in floral design. Contests held in Toronto last week for the Toronto Garden Club. Con- gratulations Lynnt 1.
