The Board month. Nu"qeed now for forty additional.nursing beds A report released last wcek by the Durham Region District Health Council states there is a present need for 40 addîtional nursing home bcds in the Region of Durham. This has been quoted as an absolute minimum and that funding should now be pro- vidcd by the province. In mentionîng delay it was pointed out that the need will risc to 53 in 1983, 79 more by 1985 and 105 more by 1990. It has been stated that numbers of seniors is on the increase but the availability of nursing home beds is not kceping pace. The Council also suggests a start on providing a place- ment information service which would list accommoda- tions, services and programs for seniors.' The counicil further sug- gests the introduction of the province's -chronic home' care- program for the Region. Such a service is designed to keep seniors, whcrc possible in their own home providing 80 hours of home-maker services in the first month and forty hours thereafter. It is felt that home care is much cheaper than institu-, tionalization. Such a service has not been available in Durham although it was testcd in three municipalities in 1975. By: ]Rod Stork, Assoc. Agricultural Representative Crop Conditions Update: "Why can't something Be in- vented to help control the weather?" This is the ques- tion that mnany farmers have been asking since the rain started and doesn't appear to want to stop., Weed control has been very spotty in many fields across the County. This is mainly due to poor chemical action after spraying. Many farmers are looking at spray- ing a second time to get weecls especially in corn fields. Care must be taken when using post-emergence spray pro- grams as plant injury can be severe. Planting of soybeans has been delaycd because of wet field conditions. Wced con- trol in fields slated for soy- beans wîll also be difficult. Again, caution is the key word in this type of program. Haying operations are underWay on some farms and should Be general by the end of the week. There has been no reports of serious insect damage in any field crops. Some atraz- ing residue damage occurrcd in oats and barley prior to the rain; however, this did not appear serious. Farmstead Improvemient Prograim: Details of this new grant program were outlined in an earlier news coiumn. At the time of writing this columnn, ail manies alloted to Durham East had been spoken for. "Notice of Intent" formis must be completed before work is donc. Despite the fact that the budget allowance is gone, farmers can stili corn- plete the "Notice of Intent" and hopefully mnoncy will be available at a later date.
