Money available for 'mental Health Group Ho10Mes By: Wendy Procher' Health bas endorsed an Nothing is yet officiai but awaited request for funds by Ontario Ministry of Mental Healthi Durham. These funds were re- quested so as to provide from two to four homes in Durham Region for discharged psychiatric patients. More than 1,0W0 psychiatric pa- tients will be released from Whitby Psychiatric Hospital and Oshawa General Jiospitai in the Durham Region this year. An approx- imation of 50 would benefit from group-home living. The estimated cost for the homes is $58,000 whicb will be used for -items and fur- nishings. Other than that the homes are to self-supporting. There are aiready two of these group hom es in Oshawa, therefore, the other new homes wiil be built out- side of Oshawa. These homes would have a home-like set- ting with residents sharing the responsibility of shopping, cookîng, cleaning, house maintenance and also par- ticipating in bouse meetings and activities. Residents wili pay $106.00 per month for a shared room and $122.00 per montb for a single room. Approx- imately $ 15.00 per week wilI be spent on groceries. The Mental Heaith Durham Group Homes have accommodations only up to 13 people. The requirements are that the homes are available to those 18-65 years of age witb a history of emo- tional problems. Homes are not available to those of suicidaI or violent behaviour. Minister of Healtb, Larry Grossman, feels there is a serious weakness in Mental Health care.
