Miss Lunn, wbo works out of an office in the Bowman- ville Post Office, encourages the publicity of "Hire A Stu- dent Week" to add incentive ïn hiring students at this time of year. She points out this is the time to get those extra jobs done arounid the house and states she has a listing of will- ing students hiaving a multitude of skills and whether ts cleaning the garage or painting the house give the Student Employment office a cail in Bowmanville. She said jobs are harder to) find this year and yet enrol- ment for student employment continues at a level of that of 1981. Some 511 students have enrpolled at the Bowmanville office with 148 being placed. in fulUime suumner jobs and 40 for part-time jobs. Robert Koch, M.,D. was 28, adventuresome, and bored with bis country prac- tice in a small East Prussian town. He began to experie- ment, st udying the substances around him. Developing bis own unique research techni- ques, he took biological samples from cattle which had died of anthrax, a comn- mon killer of livestock. Even- tually, he isolated the bacterium which was its- cause. Thus brought to public at- tention, he became a medical officer in Berlin, and con- tinued his research in a well- equipped laboratory. Now bis samples carne fromn people wbo badi died of tuberculosis, wbicb was the cause of one in seven deaths in Europe and America. He developed new laboratory procedures wbicb form tbe basis for procedures used today. He did animal ex- periments, taking risks with bis won healtb in handling in- fected materiais. At last, he isolated the tubercule bacillus and proved it was the cause of TB. The paper he presented on March 24, 1882 gave other researchers infor- mation tbey could use to seek a cure. In 1905, Koch was awarded the Nobel Prize for medicine. Today's Lung Association bas its roots in the fight against tuberculosis. Organized in 1900, (over 40 years before the development of streptomycin the first anti- TB drug) tbe Association's early work contributed great- ly to progress in the diagnosîs and treatment of tube- culosis. Today the Liang Association's efforts are directed at prevention and control of ail lung diseases in- cluding empbysema, TB, astbma- and chronic bron- chitîs and their associated causes, smoking, air pollu- tion and on-tbe-job lung hazards. Mrs. Deremo, staff co-ordinator said the motive of this day is to make sure every child is recognized for doing sometbing special througbout the year and complimented for that achievemrent. Students also received badges and pins for other various ac- tivities.
