The Kirby School Museum is open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sun- days from the hours of 2 to 5 p.m. Miss Ellen DePlaa, Newcastle, student employee at the Museum this summer, above outlines many of the fine features contained in the current display at the Museum. Miss DePIaa and Miss Sharon Chidley, Orono, are both employed at the Clarke Museum undertaking research',and cataloguing at the Museum during the sum- mer. The current display at the -Kirby School Museum depicts an era of the 1890's in ladies dress. Most of th e items on display are from dresses to hats, shoes, aprons andI beads are from former resîdents of the Township of Clarke. Such naines as Bar- rabalîs, Elliott, Sandercock, and Watson are on the displays and were actual items owned by these people in the 1890's. .The items, are ail in black to display a great deal of needlework and the applica- tion of beads. A hat owned by a former Mrs. Jennie Watson of Leskard and donated by Robert Chater of Leskard has Athough the- Ganaraska Hiking Trail has existed for a good numnber of years we have neyer taken the oppor- tunity to hike along thse trail before last Sunday when we covered a three to four mile section front Hope Township into Cavan Township. The' Trail is continuous from Port Hope to Omemee travelling along an abandon- cd railway roadbed and in some cases along alternate routes on lesser used sideroads. In the majority the trail does use the abandoned railway bed. It is the hope of the spon- sors that at sometime in thse future thse trail will link-up with thse Bruce Trail near Col- llngwood. The route from Port Hope to Omemee is looked after by thse 250-member Pine Ridge Ganaraska Trail Club who maintain contact with the landowners, look after styles at fences andI keep in contact with the Federation of On- tario Hiking Trail Associa- tion. The Ganaraska Trail is for hiking, skiing and snowshoe- ing only. To assist thse hiker on his trip the traîl is clearly marked by a brown arrow ona white square attached to trees andI posts. The trail is also mark- with white paint on -rees with one strip noting no change in direction while two stips, one above the other, indicates a change in direc- tion. A blue strip indicates side trails. Wc noted one interesting feature of travelling along the railway bed is the fact that one does not have to climb hilîs and the opportunity often arises whereby you can look down into the forest from above. Rcalizing the rail bcd was constructed in thse era prior to alI our mechaniz- ed cquipmcnt a lot of manual labour had to, be a big factor in its construction for wc passed over somne portion at least forty to fifty feet above the forest floor. In fact we were above the tops of the trees in some cases. Over thse years we have travelîcd most of thse trails in the Ganaraska Forest and now look forward to advance north-west along thse Ganaraska Trail to Omemee andI in this area using, in the most cases, tIse oltI railway bcd. Wc imagine some in- teresting walks in the Bethany area andI through the marshes south of Omemnee. If you are interested in thse outdoors this area has a lot to offer andI its only a few minutes drive from Orono. St. Francis of Assisi Monthly News am - apple blousomns as its decora- tions. The Town of Newcas- tle council recently declared the apple blossom the official flowcr of the Town of Newcastle. The collection also includes a button display- by Marie Gartshore of- Newcastle which proves most interesting as well as a portrait of Queen Victoria 1 made from but- tons. A new display will open at Kirby School Museum at the first of August. In speaking recently with Ray Dickson he pointed out that the Clarke Museum Board has had their historic items valuated and that the total now comes to over $64,000-00. Sonsething new in the forest We have always considered that Blueberries were a nor- thern wild fruit and at least one had to travel north of No. 7 highway east before coming into blue berry coun- try or into the expanses of northern Ontario. a couple of weeks ago Bill Bunting and Sid Rutherford were discussing a find in the Ganaraska Forest which they consîdercd to be blueberries. A revisit of the site on Sun- day revealed that their opi- nions were ight on course and indeed bluebernies do grow in the forest ail be it a smail patch at this time. The thimble berry crop should be excellent this year in the forest what with ail this wet weather and the forming of sizeable green fruit already on the cantes.
